Hypodermic Tubing Gun Barrels..................
Posted by chopperfan on Saturday, August 27, 2005 3:31 AM
Okay. This subject has come up a number of times. Someone wanting to know what size hypodermic tubing to use for a certain gun barrel in a certain scale.
So, what I have done is put together a list of 5 calibers (.30, .50, 20mm, 25mm & 30mm) in the 3 most popular, aircraft & helicopter, scales (1/72, 1/48 & 1/35).
Now, if you would like a copy of this, we can do it one of two ways. You can send me an e-mail and I will send it to you in Microsoft Word format or you can send me your snail mail and I will send you a copy of the chart.
I know there are gonna be some who think this is silly, anyone can figure it out with a calculator, but others may not be able to or don't have the time to. They would rather be working on their model than calculating!!!
Anyhow. I just thought I would try to be of assistance.

Hi Randie

While I think it's great that you've gone to the trouble, let me briefly explain how I've gone about sizing a hypo to match the plastic barrels I've replaced: I simply use the existing plastic barrel of the kit itself and by placing it against the various diameter hypos in my collection I can determine which gauge to use.

Do you feel that accuracy is compromised by my method because the kit's barrel may be off?

Cheers,
Eric

Let me start off, Eric, by saying. I am not a rivet counter.
There is nothing wrong with the method you use. Afterall, you are building for you and no one else.
This was just something that I had done for myself and thought I would share it with everyone here that was interested.
As far as "accuracy being compromised?" Nearly every manufacturer of model kits have already done that. Approve [^]
Have fun and good modelling.

Nor do some of us have an extensive "collection" of hypodermic needles sitting around to choose from; so your effort is appreciated, Randie. I have indeed given thought to using needles (especially for my 1/35th AH-1W), but have no idea how they are sold -- as far as how the guage sizes compare with diameter, etc. In fact, I don't even know if it'd be legal to buy medical stuff like that where I live.

I don't think you should have any problem, AH1W.
The hypodermic tubing I am referring to are not needles. It is just tubing that is sold in varying lengths.
Here is a link to one of the hypodermic tubing pages at smallparts.com.

To the best of my knowledge, it is not illegal to own/possess this tubing as it is not a needle. Just tubing. No different than brass tubing, except it's a heck of a lot smaller!!!

Thanks for the clarification, Randie. In reading other posts like this, I had always immediately associated this tubing with medical needles you'd get from a pharmacy.
Is this type of tubing usually only available online? Or are there any retail or specialty shops that would carry it?

Hey guy's, my 'collection' is totally legit. I happen to be a student in a respiratory care program and I noticed that many of the ABG kits in the lab's stockroom were out of date. After explaining what I wanted them for, I simply asked my instructor if I could keep the points and it was okay with him.

Cheers!

AH1W, I have never thought to try and find it locally. I have only seen it on-line.
I guess you might try looking in the yellow pages under medical supplys as, apparently, it is used in the medical field for things OTHER than needles.
You might also check with Grainger. It's possible that they may carry it.
Oh, by the way, Eric? I never once even considered that your assortment of needles was illegal. If I gave that impression at any time, I apologise. Approve [^]
