CV-9 Essex 1943 reference help?
Posted by yah4sure on Friday, November 18, 2005 12:44 PM
I'm building a 1:350 Scale CV-9 Essex based on May 1943
color and armament scheme. The Trumpeter Model has
catapults in the forward hangar bays. Most references I
have show that CV-9 didn't have these.

Does anyone know of a good book or books that my shed some light on if there were two Quad Bofors on the port
side as in some of the latter Essex class carriers?

Thanks for ANY help or even pure speculation. :D

Hi Gregory,
I've got that book, and "Anatomy of a ship,
The Aircraft Carrier INTREPID" by John Roberts.
Most references have pictures of CV-10 and up, or
the essex from angles I already have. I'm going
to look into the Floating Drydock and see if they
can help. Maybe I'm being too anal, but when you
invest over $175 in the model PE and brass details,
you want it to be perfect...or close.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris,

I built a CV-9 about 18 mo.s ago, and found a great reference (very dog-eared and marked up now...)

Glenn Arnold, Warship Perspectives, Essex Class Aircraft Carriers in World War Two,  ISBN not found , but the Publisher is WR Press, Inc., New York, 2002.

Alan Raven did some of the drawings, and there is a great foldout plan.

I got my copy searching on www.abebooks.com, and located someone who had it in Silver City, NM!

Cheers!

Great call Rob
I just ordered that book from totalnavy.com yesterday I'm hoping it'll help me decide which ship and time period to
build.
What did you end up building?

Thanks for the info

Hey All,

Here's the progress on the hanger deck. I added styrene sheet and sprue to hide the molding marks on the inside of the bulkheads. A little artistic license, but it breaks up the empty spaces.

Let me know if this link works...I'm new to photobucket.
