336th Squadron's "hack" P-51
Posted by buildit on Friday, February 8, 2008 7:42 PM

I was looking through one of my reference books, "Warbirds:  American Legends of WWII", and noticed a pic of an unusual P-51.  If anyone else has this book, the pic is on page 207 and the caption describes this kite as the 336th Fighter Squadron's (4th Fighter Group out of Debden, England) "hack" Mustang.  It's a two-seater, with a Malcolm-style canopy over the rear seat and the -A/B/C model "greenhouse" type canopy over the front seat.  Is anyone familiar with this configuration?  Would certainly be a challenge to build/modify an available kit, I would think.  Anyone know where I might find more about two seat P-51s and/or "hack" aircraft in general?

I'm under the impression that "hack" aircraft are kinda like a company car.  They get used as "basic transportation" (...only, with guns)  and courier type work.  Not very high on the priority list when it comes to replacement parts.  Is that correct?

Any thoughts are appreciated!!
