Liquid Mask
Posted by Lonwuff on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 10:49 AM

Hi, I asked this question on the general discussion but I got no answers. I need some liquid mask for tiny clear parts and I'm using acrylic paint. I've heard some don't work for water-based paint since they're water soluble. What are some brands you have had good luck with and not too involved with getting it peeled off?

I've been using Micro Mask by MicroScale Decals with acrylics for about 5 years now, haven't had a problem yet.

Here you can find an old thread from here discussing the subject. The fellow "Doog" is gone now, but he's an experienced modeler. Apparently he hates Micro Mask, and offers some alternate solutions. I've never experienced the problems he describes.

Edit: sorry, the second hotlink will not insert correctly. Here's the link:

Hi thanks for the reply you're the winner! The only suggestion I got (surprised me), but looking at the description it claimed it shouldn't be used with acrylic. Not always accurate claims. So I ordered Mig Liquid Mask and I'll be posting results and I thank the member that replied with their suggestion!

I have never found any that worked, so I quit trying.

Not used the Mig, but hate the old Humbrol smelly purple stuff, whic sticks but reacts to acrylic paint.
Not had any sucess at all with the Vallejo goop.

I prefer waterproof PVA/Elmers on clear parts. I embed a loop of tape or thread in it then it's easy to pop off, & it doesn't seem to mind sitting for [more than] months between work.

@Lonwuff:

I replied to your question a day after you posted it in the general discussion. See it here:

Sorry, can't make link hot. Anyone know how to do that? The link button in the toolbar doesn't seem to work.

It's sort of hit and miss. It works.....sometimes. Sort of. Sometimes not. You're not doing anything wrong.

Hi thanks for the reply you're the winner!

You're welcome.

Will my prize be in the mail, then? Stick out tongue

But seriously, if you think about it, let us know how you get along with the Mig. He has a fine line of products, IMO.

Hi, your prize is in the mail! Lol. I tried the Mig and it's great stuff (at least protecting clear parts) It comes off easy too and doesn't smell bad. I'll send Mig the same prize I sent ya.
