Alan Bassett, Caterham, Surrey, England

Alan is reworking an Airfix 1/24 scale Spitfire Mk.Ia, “which has not been bettered in this scale and which I first built when it came out in the 1970s,” he says. “The skills, picture references, and opportunity are now there to add plenty of detail. However, the Merlin from the Airfix Hurricane is far superior.” Alan’s engine overhaul utilizes lead wire, copper wire, and styrene rod, tube, and strip. Paints are brushed and sprayed Humbrol acrylics, but he has yet to add weathering or oil stains. The metal rule is where the main spar will go, he says, “also in metal, and full wingspan to fix the correct dihedral.” Alan’s pal Mick Bromley took the photo.
