Dang!  Those are some spectacular builds Aaron.  Watching these two come together has been a lot of fun, even as a spectator.  If you had half as much fun building them as I did watching, I would say you succeeded and then some!  Those pilots are da' bomb, and I think the COrsair pilot looks like the Campbell's Soup Kid.  And, who is that handsome chap in the optivisor popping his head outta the Corsair cockpit?  He looks to be a delightful chap.

Nice work on your Pacific adversaries.  You might want to put a little more work into the seams on the front of the Corsair wing so that they don't show.

Too cool! I was watching that show last night (we have a retro TV channel here) and the gues star was Boss Hogg... with a French accent. It was so weird.

I like what you did with these old kits. Just goes to show ya, with a little love even oldies are goodies!

They have the first season out in 2 DVD sets.

I have the first one haven't picked up the second yet.

Well done on two classic kits...  Wish Revell would have done a bit more work making that Corsair match one of the seven(?) real ones in the series, instead of reboxing the original, but overall, I think I bought three of 'em over the years, including the VMF-214 version..

I built the Zeke before the series, but never in the grey scheme... Don't care what anyone says, both kits were excellent subjects for super-detailing..

"The Devil in the Slot" was about the best episode of the series, IMHO..  I "fly" MS Combat Flight Simulator 2 and built that, and all the other missions shown in the series for that game...

I bought the DVDs as well, but as always, the show doesn't get better when it became "Black Sheep Squadron"...

Trust a bit of trivia about the series.. In the book, "Black Sheep One" the series is discussed quite extensively, and the thing that I'd always suspected but couldn't prove was indeed confirmed.. In order to maintain some authenticity, the producers used actual color comabt footage in many of the "dogfight" scenes... This was quite acceptable, until the detractors of the show discovered that real people were getting killed in those scenes and the uproar from the "peace-freaks" was that they were apalled that people were dying in combat and that it was part of a TV show...  It's ok to pretend to kill people, but shame if you show real folks, eh?  Anyway, they got loud enough in their complaints and threats that the show's producers were worried about sponsor boycotts, so they came up with those cockamamee story lines and "Black Sheep Squadron" came to be, and no more gun-camera or comabt footage was used...

Another bit was from the actual Black Sheep themselves... Sems that they were quite upset that Boyington used them to make money for himself, and there were a few hard feelings among the Black Sheep regarding Pappy.  One 214 pilot was quoted that there were a couple things that were dead-on accurate: "There was indeed a WW2 USMC fighter squadron VMF 214 named 'The Black Sheep' commanded by Greg Boyington, and they did indeed fly F4U Corsairs. That's were the truth ended"...  Pappy explained his going along with the writers and procucers simply by saying, "I needed the money"...     

spiralcity,   Thanks you know I always imagined him blocking punches with his face kinda like Rocky Balboa.  Reading some of his stories I don't think that's too far off although it seems he was more of a wrestler.

Division 6  I feel your pain. My original one had a moving box of books  fall on it. Really shattered it. I shall look for those DVD's today. They are like $35 plus  even on amazon Geeze!

If I didn't say it over in the NAWGB great job on the Corsair!  So I take it Pepsi was the Zero?  I was about to say you were a steely eyed model builder buying the Tammie Zero just for the decals, but what the heck you are a steely eyed model builder.  Great work on both kits.

Mike  have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHO8hLB3xBk&feature=related  I read Black Sheep 1 and found that book to be pretty genuine in getting a feel for the Real Greg Boyington. He wasn't very good at pretense. Good old fashioned straight forward fellow.  How is that ol' Monogram Avenger coming along? Have I missed it. Been kinda in and out with bum choppers. It came to mind more than once while I was working on these especially when  filling all those seams.

The Monogram Avenger is at the same point it was when I last posted in the thread about it... I kinda put it on the back-burner to get caught up on some GB projects (which I'm suckin' hind ta-ta in as well) and will get back to it eventually, I guess... It's at about 85%. but the dio needs to get started soon... I've gone back to the original Midway dio idea, with it being VT-8's sole survivor (8-T-1) from the battle..

Excellent job Aaron! I didn't know Revell made those. I would have to agree though that the figure looks nothing like Boyington. Great job with two vintage kits!

They really bring back the memories. I used to watch " Baa Baa Blacksheep" all the time when it was on the History Channel. "I get you next time Boyington!"

Gotta love Revell's Generi-Pilot figure, who appeared in every nation's aircraft, in all theaters, wearing that heavy flying suit.  I mean, who's idea was it to mold front and back halves?!  They scaled him down to 1/48 for their B-25 and included 3 in the kit, when that one was issued.  Heck, I think he might even have been passed along to Hasegawa at some point.

But you know something-that pilot actually looks a lot more like Boyington than Robert Conrad ever did

Aaron, Excellent stuff. You are a serious asset to this forum just for your sheer enthusiasm and nutjobbedness . Some of your scratchbuilding is just fantastic and now youll have more time over at your true home with the rest of the reggies.

...there are some seams showing on the leading edge of that Corsair though (as mentioned earlier). It needs some putty squished in there and a little touch up. Also some blue paint appears to have been sucked under the masking on the cowl. Tape masks need to be burnishes down real good, especially with thinned paints such as with airbrushing. But don't mash it too hard either, I've cracked the seams on my builds doing that!

BTW, on my nightstand currently is Pappy Boyington's autobiography, Baa Baa Black Sheep. It's very interesting. He was a very troubled and complex man... he suffered from clinical depression and alcoholism...

 Thanks for the kind comments everyone!  I think all the older hats probably have tackled a Revell 1/32 sometime in their youth. They were just plain cool and big!

PaintsWithBrush   I'd agree with ya but remember in 1970 a kit with any pit detail and it's own engine was pretty advanced stuff. Even the Tamiya stuff back then was along those lines. Models were mean't more as toys and gimmicks abounded at the cost of accuracy but what does a 7 year old know anyways? LOL

Summit  Still playing catch -up Sean fighting with that FM Ventura and scratching stuff for my 251/ 10 You better believe I am wanting to do more of these oldies. I can't remember the last time I was anxious to get home from work and start on them again. Didn't want to go to bed as I was having such fun!  Wife had to threaten me with no Sat morning cartoons to get me to go to bed.

mkhoot , You know I was really comparing the Zero to the new Tamiya one as I used the extra markings. The Tamiya kit was a great ref.  When looking at them side by side it was like comparing a Ford Pinto to a Corvette.  The Revell kit has 8 steps. The Engine 4 parts.  The Tamiya kit is a book and the Engine closer to 45 parts alone. The kits are what they are but I was able to use a lot more of my imagination on the Revell. I think each have a place here though.

Guy  wondered if you still cared LOL!  Makes me feel missed in a manly no pink sorta way. I figured if you can build those Gunsites in 1/48 then I had to give it a shot in 1/32!  What you working on now? You have been quiet and that usually means your into something! 

trexx  Great tip. I actually finally after all this time ordered some Tamiya Tape.  Frank swears by it! Or at it.. One or the other.  I got all that fixed up somewhere in the process. Everytime I took a picture It seemed I'd see something in the photo I didn't notice before. Been taking a lot of pics. Probably just should get better light and new glasses LOL!

 Those drinking problems and depression tend to feed off each other. Still know a lot of people that live like that and think it's normal. Especially in the service sad to say.  Still pretty much gets ignored until it gets out of control. Maybe the same qualities that make them into a brawler and drinker are related to the courage and precision of the warrior. Who can say?

As a lover of both Pintos and Vettes there is no comparison between the two, nor should there be.  Unless you're talking about easiness to work on.  My 73 Pinto was the easiest car I ever owned to work on, right behind it was the 80 K5 Blazer.  I don't even think about turning a wrench on my 03 Mustang.  Perhaps a better analogy would have a 2009 Vette to a 69 Vette.

You kiddin'?  They were at the top of my Christmas list from the time they started coming out, lol... I used the "Black Sheep" Corsair for my first "motorized" build.   I still snag 'em when I see 'em... Been totin' unbuilt kits of Kepford's Corsair, the Zeke, P-51B, and Beaufighter around with me since 1990, lol... I finally broke down last fall and started the Spitfire, for a diorama with the Tamiya 1/35th Wirlbelwind that shot it down.. (That's a German SP Quad 20mm for you fly-guys who don't do much armored vehicle recognition training) 

The Typhoon was my first, when I was in elementary school, and my older cousin Scott helped me (learned about spraying paint, and priming, things like that, from him).  Also built both F4U's, the P-51B and the P-47D bubble top.  After that, I had no room on the shelf for any more!

And the same pilot, every time.

At least, he was better than the pilot they included in the 1/28 Fokker Dr. I.  I always thought that figure's pose looked a little effeminate.
