Group build thoughts?
Posted by Railfan 233 on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 7:39 PM

I am thinking about throwing a group-build out in the next week or so, to celibrate the kick-off of my Summer vacation (it started today). Here's a list of what I'm thinking of. Please reply and tell me if you like one of these. I will be looking foward to seeing what you think.

First big ideas:

  1. old, rusty car build (The Rusty Bumpers in Summer build of 2010) based on what has been seen on the internet (all car models apply)
  2. Free paper model build (The "While The Glue Dries" build of 2010) Build the model during "down-time" from waiting for the glue to dry. (All FREE paper models apply.) All materials needed is cardstock (from Wal-Mart), white glue (any self-respecting dollar store or pharmacy) and a hobbyknife with a fresh #11 balde (everyone has one)

There are my ideas. Let's see which one gets more responce, and that one will be the one I will use for my first time hosting a Group-Build

 Anyone out there?

I'm starting to get a little worried I have offended someone in some way. I posted this Wednesday afternoon, but it still hasn't gotten any responce, and only 11 views.

I will change the subject now:     What do you not like about my ideas? Was there anything I did wrong?

Please respond and tell me what I did wrong, and I'll try to avoid it.

You are probably posting this in the wrong place.  Try putting it in the Group Builds Forum.  You are likely to get more response there.

By the way, 'Paper models'?  Not familiar.  Can you educate me?

Ditto  Generally there isn't as much traffic over here as in the Group Build forums.  And you may want to list in the Auto forum.  The auto option looks interesting-I just don't know if I have the time for it....but I would consider it....Good luck.

Phew! If all I have to worry about is posting in the wrong area, then I have no worries now.

To answer your question, bbrowniii , Paper models are exactly that: models you download off of the internet, and print out on your computer. Most of them cost less than $5.00 (most are free) and all you need to do is print them out on cardstock (a thick paper, avalable from Wal-Mart) Just use a aherp #11 blade to cut them out and then glue them together with white glue. It's easy, anda good "while the glue dries" model (I build them while I have down-time on my workbench. Never a dull moment with one)

Here are some links, if you are interested:

https://www.fiddlersgreen.net/   -Most of the models on this website cost less than $5.00, but there are some free models floating around (I also like this site because it's rich with prototype info) This was what started the "paper ball" rolling for me

http://waspcv7.republika.pl/warsztat.htm   - Free paper models of U.S. NAVY aircraft (mainly WWII) It's in polish, so I hope your computer has a translator (It's no big deal if it doesn't It's a great way to learn Polish for "Download")

http://paper-replika.com/index.php?option=com_alphacontent&section=10&Itemid=156  - Lots of subjects. some off-beat ones, too.  Plenty of free models, but a majority need a "key" to see them (I can't get them, so I havn't built them)  Good military models, though

http://hudatdere.freehostia.com/index.html - Bus models, mainly. They are suppose to be geared for the HO scale model railroading crowd, but I like them a lot (O.K., I'm also a model railroader, but I represent both hobbies equally)  These models are easy to assemble, also great if your a fam of Greyhound Buses (They have 7 of them) I would highly reccomend them for a first-time build

http://www.bestpapermodels.com/en/free-paper-models.html  - few free paper models here, unfortunately.   I figure I would include them, incase you want a model of a Russain RG-42 Grenade

http://www.papertigerarmaments.com/  -paper models of WW II tanks, trucks, aircraft, and artilery pieces. Unfortunately there is only 1 free model ( the rest cost about $3.00 adverage)  If you have the money to get them, you'll probably be happy with these models ( especially if you like WWII subjects)

http://www.wayoftherodent.com/gd101/bs_paperarcade.htm -I havn't figured out the exact theme of this website, but it has some nice models of old Arcade games

http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/  - Paper models of nearly every NASA vehicle or satalite immagenable. Unfortunately, it's fairly complex ( the instructions are an adverage of 10-16 pages long)

http://combatstorm.com/  - A website for a new war-game using plastic army men (like what you probably had back when you were a kid, and/or what you could get at the dollar-store)

That's about it for what I have found that I liked. Just do a Bing or Google search if you want to find more.

Thanks for the info on paper models.  Pretty interesting stuff...

Any time.  It is interesting what can be built with paper.

My guess is that perhaps they don't register with anyone. No offense to be taken. They are a bit unique, but then I've saw quite a few rust-buckets at the last model show I was at.

You might have to go more mainstream to kick off a GB. Think "popular" subjects. Of course you can't ignore the fact that summer is here and people get busy this time of year. I'm thinking of holding off an idea I have until a little later on just for that reason.
