Which Fokker to choose

Hello all,

I've decided I want to model something from a bit (quite a bit) further back in time than I usually do. WWI to be precise.

I wanted to try a WWI plane so I could attempt some rigging in the wings, I've never done that before. I didn't want anything too intimidating from the rigging standpoint, just something to get my feet wet. I decided on a Fokker DR.1 triplane as any pictures I've seen of them don't seem to indicate a Spanish galeon's worth of lines in the wings.

I've looked at Eduard's 1/72 DR.1 and it looks nice, but I've also seen Revell Germany's 1/72 DR.1 on shelves too. I've seen the Eduard kit out of the box, but have not seen the RoG kit.

Can anyone tell me how the RoG kit (2003 tooling) stacks up against the Eduard offering?

I've heard the RoG kit's Spandau guns are real gems with no need of aftermarket replacement. but thats all I've heard about it.

the Dr.1 is an excellent choice, there r only about 6 bracing wires u need...
(4 in the cabane strut area & 2 down by the landing gear struts). of course, this is not including the control wires 4 the ailerons, horizontal & vertical stabilizers, but. it's a start.

there was an article in SAM recently w/ a buildup & comparison of both kits u r asking about., & u mite want 2 check the Mad Fokker Day thread in Group Builds, there's a bunch of interesting stuff there about the Dr.1 in prototype & kit form.
i think from a rigging standpoint, the Revell kit will b a bit easier since i believe it already has little holes where the wires should go.

I'm planning to do the same myself, does anybody has a good source for aftermarket Parabellum or Spandau MG??

Both are excellent kits with their own strengths & weaknesses. You really can't go wrong with either.

Saul, check out the Mad Fokker Day thread for details about aftermarket stuff to detail your Dr.1. There are links to websites that will help along too.

Upnorth, what a great idea! The main problem with the Revell kit, really, is the colour of the plastic... You guessed it, bright red... Frosty did a great job on her Eduard kit and so did my wife at her first ever attempt at scale modeling. The Revell kit is, I think, slightly superior (the engine looks better -beefier- and so do the machine guns), but that's my opinion after having witnessed the build of the Eduard kit and having built the Revell kit...

Hi, upnorth, I've got both kits ; the Eduard (actually the plastic kit came with the strip-down version) and the new Revell kit.
I have not build the Eduard plastic kit, only the one from Revell.

The interior on the Revell kits is more detailed than Eduard's, however, when the fuselage is fully assembled there is only a small part that can be seen.
As for fitting ; I can only speak about the Revell-kit : it's great.

Iam not a 72nd scale builder and only familar with the larger scale stuff. Revell and Hobbycraft's 1/28 scale. And exicitngly now a 1/32 scale due out by Roden available for advance order with Squadron & GReatmodels. Hobbycraft also is supposed to deliver a 1/32 scale Dr I and is available for advance order with Greatmodels but I suspect that one is more than moths from being released. I just wanted to put a plug in for CopperState Models PE/Resin aftermarket upgrades for these larger scales if thats the way you decided to go. http://www.amug.org/~copperst/

Thanks for the tips folks, I think I'll make it the RoG one for myself.

I have a couple of other kits in the wings that will require bracing wires and I want to use the DR.1 asa practice piece more than anything.

One of the kits I have waiting is Bilek's 1/72 Antonov AN-2 Colt. I tried building it a few years back and screwed her up beyond repair, but now I've got a second chance (not to mention an AM cockpit set) to built it and I want to get it right and the wing rigging will be key.

I also have a Smer reissue of Heller's old Moraine Saulnier MS-230 waiting and I want to do a good job of that with rigging as well.

I like the DR.1 as well and the price on both the Eduard and RoG 1/72 kits seemed right for a practice go.

Strange, I've been at this hobby for over 20 years and its taken me this long to get to my first WWI project.
