It was an M5 Stuart Light Tank of some sort, IIRC. I'm not sure the M5 or M5A1.

That was a great one. The soldiers names appeared on the battlefield monument, and the Guard commander looking for them said something to the effect of "too bad they couldn't bring up the tank".

I'm pretty sure they didnt bring the tank, as they probably didn't have any live MG or tank ammo along-they were just out for some exercises.  I'm suprised they had ammo for their carbines (all three were complete nut jobs btw)

Sure they were, but it was the 'zone. That show may have been what gave me my quirky sense of humor., or it could have been Dad, or it could have been Zapcomix.

No they didn't. It got stuck or something and they decided to pile out and head up the ridge without it. I always wondered if it rusted away to nothing, or if somebody dragged it away and raised chickens in it. Now, Crazy Horse with a captured M1, that would be a figure.

John Milius kind of ripped this off for the end of Red Dawn. And there was an old SNL skit with a quiz show where the hosts posits:" what would have happened if Napoleon had a B-52 at the battle of Waterloo?". Well, it depends; a C or a G?

There's no indication in the script there was a problem with the tank. (Just saw it again New Year's Day so Im not reliying on 45 year old deposits in the memory bank, just 3 week old ones. Smile [:)])

Well, ripped off is an unfortunate term and I apologize for that, but when they see the monument at the end of the movie with the heroes names, it had for me an emotional turn that reminded me of the tv show.

I don't know what happened to the tank- I haven't seen the show in 40+ years, and my memory isn't so great but it was always a favorite.

If you have Netflix, you can see it instantly on your computer. It's in Twilight Zone: Volume 19.

I own the DVD, Red Dawn. I like that movie. Very parallel to Afghanistan right now but opposite rolls.
I have a feeling that I'm about to get jumped here for that statement.

Probably more like Russia's misadventure in Afghanistanin the 80's than today.

It's my fault to bring Red Dawn into this so I'll keep it brief. I liked that movie too, which in some lists was the most violent movie ever made up to that time. Besides being based on a story, it had a convincing backstory assembled in part by General "I'm in charge" Haig which among other things argued against the withdrawal of tactical nuclear missles for Europe. For a brief shining moment President Reagan was too liberal; as he was willing to negotiate this pro quo with Gorbachev.

But back to the 'zone, I don't have Netflix but I would really like to see that episode again, so pass the Good'n'Plenties! Why didn't they have the tank?

IIRC it stalled and would not restart

That's an M3A3, not an M5 or M5A1. The M5/A1 had raised engine deck whereas that engine deck is flat from front to back on the M3A3. The M3A3 was widely exported and US forces used the more modern M5.

Note the flat upper hull on this AFV Club M3A3:

Versus the raised rear engine deck on the M5A1:

Nice reply post, Rob! Very complete.

also, the angles of the sides of the upper hull is noticable. I built the Tamiya M5A1 many years ago, and saw this difference in the pictures.
