Correct, the stars are the thread's rating, but I mean individual posts, not the thread.  Even adding a thumbs-up means having to create reply.  And creating a reply means that that thread is now added to our Discussions, further cluttering them up.  A single click of "like", or "thanks" is a little easier.

I think a lot of us would like that .

I think it's been suggested before, so I apologize for a duplication, but I'd like to suggest that the forum add a "Like this post" feature. So many times, I see posts that I like, but I don't want to take the time or have the time to write a reply.  But I'd like to show a positive response.

I don't mean a Like feature a la Facebook, with dislikes as well as likes.  But just a "Like this post" feature.  Some other forums I belong to use such a feature.  Some have a "Thanks" feature, too.  They'd be nice to have.

 

Sometimes, similar to the SMCG on facebook, there is nothing left to say to add to the conversation, but you want to acknowledge the conversation....

I've never felt this necessary, and yes it's been brought up a few times.

But this thread has changed my opinion and I agree it would be a nice thing to have. Some really good points made here.

I apologize for bumping my own thread, but the scenario keeps coming up.  So far, in the 5 minutes since I logged in today, I've read several posts in various threads, and I liked the content.  But I didn't like it enough to add a post that merely contains an emoticon and have that thread added to my accumulated discussions.  A simple Like button would have been perfect.

It’s a great suggestion. This is a thread I would use the like feature if we had one so  will have to do for now.  

Bumping this again.  I just read some more posts that deserved a "like", but didn't really need a whole reply post from me, and I don't need the thread added to "My Discussions."  A "like" would be so much user-friendlier.

Yes, it would be nice to have such a capability here.

I hate it.  Saying you like something adds nothing to the conversation.  If you like a given post or comment tell me what you like about it.  I just feel it's lazy.  As a newer modeler it lets me and others learn more about the hobby.  I may never meet any of you but I'm very interested in what you have to say.

If one is not one of the early commenters, but is late to the party and has nothing to add besides another "attaboy/nice work/etc.", a "like" fills the same role. On the other hand, if someone has a new critique or comment on a post or build, which adds some tidbit of information, sound off. There is a difference between the types.

I agree, Paul.  I could do without it.  I could see it being a lot like the quote feature that rarely gets used and the most recent post in a thread getting the "like" when the person hitting the button actually liked a post that was 10 posts up.  To that end, nobody would really know what post a "like" was actually for.  Besides, there are always the emoticons if someone is pressed for time.  I'd rather see the development team being able to allocate their resources to fixing broken features like the PM function.  They're obviously juggling a lot of stuff without a lot of manpower to throw at it.  Trying to add a new feature like that just doesn't sound like a good use of their time.

I'll say this, I use the "like" feature sometimes to draw attention to either the OP or what I feel like is an important post to me that I want to the person who either made the thread or a post to see. As far as using the "like" button for liking a build or what someone has accomplished/done....I'm out on that. Accomplishments and results are ALWAYS worth a comment and not a simple and lazy push of a button.

Another example of where a Like button would be nice.  In the thread about private messages not working, one of our fellow forum members posted that he found that it's an issue of secure and insecure browsing.  Tim K passed that along to the developers.

I'd like to show that I like that news, but I have to post a comment, thereby adding to my discussions list, when all I want to do is show that I like the news.  And I don't believe in the draconian position of "If you don't have something to write, then you shouldn't make any kind of response at all."

And it's an enhancement request, it's not a business-critical or even high issue, it's simply a request from a customer for something that would be nice to have. I understand that the devs have higher priorities.  I work in application development myself.  It's simply a user story added to the backlog.

See I would love to be able to like or thank this post. The like function is pretty much standard on any forum and it's absence here is glaring. Sure there will be people out farming for likes or those that don't get any and feel left out but that can happen with comments as well. Having a like or thanks function just lets people know that their material was read and appreciated without having to do a whole reply. 

For example it can be very disconcerting when somebody asks a question, you take time to respond and then nothing. Did they read the response? Did they not like what you said? Were other people interested in what you said? 

There is a thread about GBs where the reducing forum use is part of the discussing. For a forum to be effective beyond just gathering information there needs to be a sense of community. Beyond a few old timers there is very little sense of community here as interaction between members is restricted to typing a reply to anything that interests them. A simple like, or thanks button can increase that sense of community when at least you know people took the time to read what you wrote. Number of views doesn't matter if those viewing looked at the first picture of the thread and then just went away. 

Forums such as Britmodeller and Model Car Magazine feel like a community in part due to the use of a simple like button.
