Just kidding. Yes, I have noticed that. I try to only do that when I complementing someone on a build. Normally I try to make it a little longer than what I posted above. But when I see a long post (I mean a really long post) I don't usually read it unless I have the time. So I try to not make it too long ether. But when it comes to saying something nice about another persons model, there isn't usually much to say other than something like "looks great, that camo is awesome! And ditto on the weathering." And since I'm not really into jets like some people, I don't usually complement them. It's not that I don't like what they built, I just don't have the knack for building jets (right now at least). Therefor, I don't quite know how to complement them. If I really wanted to get my post count up, I probably would though. So generally, I try to only post when I have a serious comment to make.

I couldn't help but notice you posted this here in the Asssistance forum rather than the Odds and Ends. Wonder why? Seriously, I think it's inescapable when you base ranks solely on the number of posts a person has. Personally, I think the post count should be done away with. Why does it matter so much how many posts a person has?

My sentiments exactly.
But, let's not get into this again. This whole thing started up about a year ago, along with some other unfortunate issues, and caused a lot of problems. Some members left because of people who seem all too worried about "post count", and other issues, and not what this forum is all about. Modelling!!!!
If I feel that a simple two or three word response is sufficient for the post I'm responding to, then that's all I'm gonna say. I don't care about the post count.
So, let's just let this post die and go away.

My humble opinion is-forget post counts-ya can't cash them in. And yes! Give a 3 word post to a build-it boosts morale.

Two things I've never understood about this old postcount gripe:

1. Why would anyone care about increasing their post count? I have the highest post count here at FSM, and I couldn't care less. It just means I gab a lot!

2. Why would someone wanting to increase their postcount bother anyone else? If someone gets their kicks racking up posts, how does that possibly interfere with the enjoyment of the forums by any other members? Let 'em have their fun, I say!

Concerning short replies, hey, not everyone's a Shakespeare. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with a hearty 'Welcome to FSM!" for each and every new member!

Two words for people who are bothered by postcounts: Lighten up!

All I can say is that someone new to a forum may be swayed by high-posters for whatever reason -- I mean, hey, they post a lot, so they must be long-respected forum users who reeeally know what they're talking about, right?
That's about the only reason that I can think of....of why someone would want to rack up a post count -- to impress the less-informed. Or maybe they just like pretty colored stars. Don't get me wrong, I will probably get to 1000 posts someday, and there's nothing wrong with anyone who does. But someone who does it in 6 months as opposed to 2 or 3 years raises my eyebrow as to their true intentions, especially when they post odd comments here and there about nothing in particular.
So yes, MA Cooke, other people do notice this, and yeah, maybe we are uptight, lol. You can usually tell the star-searchers by the level of content, spelling, and maturity (read age) in their posts. My solution has been to read up on as many topics that interest me, learn who's who in the forum, and then weed out the high-babble posters vs. the high-information posters in my own mind.

While I think posting "good jobs" and such are a nice morale booster for a novice modeler, it is rather useless for someone who is trying to improve their skills by getting some true constructive criticism.

Folks tend to post photos of kits either for display purposes (look what I did!) or for critique (how does it look?). Nothing wrong with either one, but each deserves a different answer.

If someone just posts a photo of his latest and greatest kit, the oohs and ahs are fine. If someone else has tried a new technique and really wants to know how it looks, give him or her honest feedback.

As far as "neffing", I've never heard the term, but have seen the post count hunters at the major forums that use a post count (ARC, Armorama, FSM, etc.). I don't think it hurts, but it does tend to bury good information in a sea of "looks greats".

The post count has been an inherent feature of the forum even before we joined. It is not something that any or some of the members requrested for. If some members believe that this feature is not doing the forum any good they may contact the administrators about this issue or leave the forum if they cannot accept this feature.

While I agree that we may question the intentions of members posting one liners such as "That looks great!" or "Welcome to the forum", we should always respect the right of that member to post in whatever manner he/she wants (provided he/she does it within the forum guidelines.)

Moreover, not all of us here are experts that can scrutinize any shown model down to the last rivet. I for one do not have the expertise to be able to breakdown the shown model into technical things. All I understand is I know when I see a great looking model and that is exactly what I'll say. Anybody can write a page long comment or evaluation of any model presented here. And such will be appreciated. But when others can't do the same and just say "I like your model alot." Shall we just judge him as trying to increase his postcount?

Very well put Dwight-I almost wish there wasn't a post count, but I thinks it helps to identify 'sage' members to us newbies!

It seems to me that the two examples noted: "welcome to the forum" and "nice build" are very polite responses. I would not countenance anything that lowered the level of politeness in this forum. Would you?

Postcount IMHO is NOT really related to the wisdom of the poster (with some exceptions of previous members like Shermanfreak...)
A high postcount could just mean two things:

1.) The member has been a regular contributor of the forum for a long time. Even with just one or two posts a day, a member who has been posting say since 2001will have a high postcount.
2.) Or the member just posts a lot.

During the early days of the FSM forum, members are very friendly and often post as if chatting online. Info, tips, jokes and even off topic posts were taken in without regard to post count. Nobody cared much about post counts anyway or who has the highest post count. The forum was so friendly and interactive then that I remember posting a lot in those times.

Now it is quite different...

Too many people worried about somebody else's post count and not what this site is about. MODELLING!!!!
So, let's get back to modelling, posting what you think is appropriate and, hey? You might even make a friend or two.

Hmmm, I agree, too many people worry about post count so why on earth do we have this thread? I post because I like to reply, and being in group builds kinda racks up the posts quickly. I don't think newbies here are intimidated because all the big guys are so friendly i remebr when I had only 1 post i got some very helpful and friendly answers from some high up types lol.

And frankly, I like my shiny stars.

I can relate to that.

IMHO, the posting rank is really not value added. I just ignore it. If you want to be here for the long haul, and get to know members on a first name basis, be part of the family, etc., then you will accumulate a lot of stars. Something that is overlooked is the amount of postings that accumulate during a group build. The forum sort of turns into an instant messaging board sometimes during those. If you choose to occasionally contribute or opine, then you won't get a lot of stars, your contributions are still important no matter what the "rank"......so what is the big deal?

I got all my stars flapping my jaws in one part or another of the board... met a lot of nice people and correspond regularly with some of them now..

If anything my stars just show I talk too much! (something my wife accuses me of haha)

forgot to add... I have also seen blatant post mongering for stars by a few people... while annoying to have some inane comment inserted in a good conversation, I think it just shows positive that the person in question is not a valued member at the time... the few I've seen do it eventually come out of it though and become participaters so it's all good!
