403 Forbidden Error for me
Posted by oortiz10 on Thursday, December 31, 2020 12:45 PM

Hey there FSM,

I've seen posts that other members have had problems with the 403 error starting around the time of the outage on the 17th, but their problems cleared up.

I'm getting the 403 when I try to post in the GB Forum. I can post in the Aircraft Forum just fine. When I try to use the "Reply" function, I get the 403 error when I try to post. Oddly, I can use the "Quick Reply" function, but in doing so, I lose any formatting when my content posts.

I wrote one of the moderators, but I'm not sure if the message went through. That's why I'm posting here.

Regards,

-O

-It's Omar, but they call me "O".

I was trying to respond to a Private Message yesterday and I got the 403 error message. Everytime there is an "outage" something goes wrong with this forum. There was an "outage" sometime last year and ever since then I no longer receive email notifications.

Me, too, right now, trying to reply to a thread in the Welcome forum  ("to paint or not").

When I tried to copy that thread's URL into this post, that triggered the 403 error.

I think that I have this figured out. It seems that if you copy a link to any website you will get the 403 error. Instead, copy the link as plain text. That seems to work.

Unfortunately, I don't think that scenario describes every occurrence of this error here on the forum.  I just got the error again, when trying to reply to a thread I replied to yesterday successfully.  I didn't try to embed any links in my reply, nor are there any links in the original post or any of the other replies.  That's also the situation with the previous occurrence I had with the error.

Error 403 indicates that a process didn't have permission to complete what it wanted to do.  That could occur with a link to another page or website, that a user uses, but it could also just occur with the calls made by the page itself.  I think Kalmbach has a new issue to resolve with the forum website and its servers.

And just now, I returned to that same thread and posted a reply without error.

As an application support and tester by profession, I really think the issue is local to Kalmbach's servers and to the forum's software.  I would not be surprised if there has been a recent change, whether on the part of Kalmbach's developers, or, on the part of the vendors who provide the server software, and there's an incompatibility somewhere, that no one thought about.

Getting the error a lot today.  Not on every reply, and not always on the same thread.

Hi guys,

I've acknowledged that we're aware of this. However, we have only so much developer time to go around. Right now, the company's main priority is our new Trains.com initiative. This is taking all our dev horsepower to get going. Online will get to it as soon as they have the time to spare.

Thanks,

TK

I just tried to create a post in the Auto forum on Friday, 12:45 PM est (1/22/21)

and got the 403 forbidden error. Opened a new window and the same thing occurred. I'm using MS Edge and an HP laptop running Windows 10.

Yup. I have seen the same error multiple times. In my case I have noticed a pattern. It seems to happen most when including the previous posters message. When I tried again without their quote, just as a straight reply, it seemed to work. I may be wrong about all that but thus far, that is what I noticed.

Mine was a new post. It would not let me create a new post.

I do notice on occasion that within a thread, some member's posts have the reply button and others do not, even within the same thread where everyone but one or two responses will not have a reply button.

Actually that acknowledgement was from mid December on the “403 Forbidden” that was happening at that time, was reported on a different thread, and appears to have been resolved within a few days.  A second batch has started appearing at the end of December, along with several threads, and until this message, no acknowledgement that you guys have looked at our messages reporting the problem. At least now we know, as well as the priority for any corrective action to resolve the recurring problem.

I got the 403 trying to submit a reply to a post 3 days ago that had a link in it. Using the link icon in the editor caused the 403, when I manually added the link tags using BBC code it worked fine. I just happen to have some knowledge of BBC code from being a long time Proboards member, so I figured I'd give it a try and it worked. I'm no computer expert and I'm NOT saying the problem is the editor, but it does seem to be a part of the issue here. I'll search for BBC code tags and post it when I find something, maybe it will serve as a work around until the issue here gets resolved.

I have had the error code when using links too.

I got it too and It seems to be related with pasted HTML code, or other code into the page. Perhaps some form of SQL injection protection? That can't handle some characters?

Workaround that worked for me:

Cut all your text (CTRL+X) , and paste it back again without formatting. In chrome you can do that easily with CTRL+SHIFT+V.
paste without formatting

Or paste it in notepade, select and copy from notepad, and paste it back in forum.

As I've mentioned above, though, that's not the only scenario in which the error occurs.  I have gotten the error when replying to a thread that has no posts with links or pasted contet, without pasting anything into my reply.

In any case, at least we know that it is on Support's radar, albeit not as a business critical or high priority.

JohnnyK

Yesterday I couldn't open the "Forums" do to the 403 Forbidden error.

The same problem is happening today. HOWEVER, the problem only happens when I am using my MacbookAir. I do not have the 403 Forbidden error when opening "Forums" using my Windows 10 PC.

I've had 3 403's in the past couple days. So watch, this one will work fine.

Win 10, Firefix latest version.

Edit: Yep, figures. Big Smile

I'm not sure about this, but it seems as if I'm getting the 403 when inserting a quote within a reply. Otherwise ok.

Unless that's just a fluke, which is possible.
