Dr. Strangelove. The ultimate war, the most ridiculous circumstances.

Lotsa great movies here but a little surprised no one has mentioned either 'The Great Raid' or 'Patton'.

I'd probably list the 'The Great Raid' as my all time favorite.

'Enemy at the Gates' was another great movie and a little surprised only Mississippivol listed it.

Gettysburg, Kelley's Heroes, and Downfall.

There was also a great sci-fi one called "The Keep" that I loved. Just got that on video a few months ago---finally!

Well since we,re trying to name them all now...... anybody remember The Cain Mutiny? Or Stalag 17? Not the Hogans Heros tv show but the movie the show was based on.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Come to think of it, I've never seen a BAD war movie (except for Pearl Harbor maybe (; ).  Some are better than others, but they're all good in some way.  My favorite way to spend a rainy day is with and old B&W war movie.

Enemy at the Gates w/Jude Law anyone?

Man, that movie rocked hard, but jeez, was I royally PO'ed that they had to stick in that pointless subplot romance with that Russian sniper-girl! Entirely necessary!!!

The story itself was enthralling enough for them NOT to have to jazz it up with romance! I mean, like--what--they had to try to bring in the fairer sex for box office receipts? lol

That's because Vassilli Zaitsev and Tania actually were involved in a romance during the Stalingrad Battle. Although he was something of a player in reality and hooked up with another female sniper rather than the 'happily ever after' version of the film. The book that the movie was based upon has their story (along with the rest of the battle and the immediate aftermath).

Ahhhh!! I didn't know that! I think that that movie came out around the era of that "Pearl Harbor" movie, where they DID jazz that up with a love story, and all the critics were saying it really detracted from the narrative; I figured that they did the same thing in this one?

And I still say that the story of sniper-vs-sniper was compelling enough for them to ignore that love story aspect of it. But,. that's Hollywood!

Gotta say that Saving Private Ryan is at the top the list for me. Just an up close reminder at the price of the freedom that we do have here.

Full Metal Jacket comes in a close second. Just love R Lee Ermey as a drill instructor.

Band of Brothers is awesome too. Thanks for reminding me--Gotta get the box set.

Yes indeed. Most of the characters named and used in the movie were in the book of the same name, except perhaps Sasha's mother. I dont recall her being listed. But of course Hollywood took the actual story and twisted it quite a bit. The sniper duel is indeed fascinating and even more compelling as written there. The finale, while similar is even more breathtaking in reality.

Hmmm, I've been around to see most of these...  So I'll name a few that have not been named ( I think).

Fighter Squadron - P-51s as 109s!

Aces High - WWI and angst.

Air Force - John Garfield as a reluctant gunner on a B-17 at the beginning of WW II.

Operation Pacific -  Hey!  It's John Wayne!  And Subs!  What else could you want?

Flying Leathernecks - Hey! It's John Wayne!  And Marine Corsairs!  What else could you want?

Oh, and my all time favorite war movie??

The Sands of Iwo Jima - Hey!  It's John Wayne!  And Marines!  What else could you want? Wink

I'll second Sands of Iwo! I'm an airplane guy, and this movie has almost no airplanes, but I still loved the story and the acting.

I'll echo the Doog with "Downfall".  Captures the mood inside the fuhrerbunker and the subsequent breakout.  Crappiest rendition of a German tank for a while though.  Surprised they couldnt borrow a Tiger replica from SPR

Good films mentioned here! But how 'bout Flyboys, Pacific, letters from Iwo Jima, flags of our fathers.

Before Spielberg made Private Ryan, the Fins made the film winter war". The first time you think the bullets are flying trough the cinema! A Chinese film, Nanking, the city of life and death. The only war movie what gave me the creeps!

One of my favorites, Yamato, a Pacific battleship.

On the bench: 1:350 Yamato + I-400, 1:48 F15 strike eagle...

Just picked up "For Greater Glory" starring Andy Garcia about the Cristero war in Mexico in the 20's. It'll fire you up for sure!

Another movie I've been wanting to see is "The Best Years of our Lives"(?). It portrayed the boys after coming home from WW2. It had Dana Andrews and Myrna Loy in it.

It is funny I just stumbled on this thread.  The reason being I recently decided to beef up my meager collection of war flicks (I was always content just catching the classics on the TV.....but no longer.)  Anyways for the time being I am focusing my collection on WW2, though I already own a couple others from the Vietnam genre (obviously Platoon and Apocalypse now....sadly I owned a copy of Full Metal Jacket on VHS, but no longer have a VHS player, so need to repurchase that one at some point.)  Anyways what I have so far is:

Saving Private Ryan, Band Of Brothers, 1941 (classic Belushi!), Father Goose (with Carey Grant...actually one of my most favorite Carey Grant movies!), Mr. Roberts, a 4 movie deal I got off amazon with the Battle Of Britain, The Great Escape, Run Silent Run Deep and A Bridge Too Far on it, and another 4 pack deal I found with Battleground (with Van Johnson), Kelly's Heroes, Where Eagles Dare and The Dirty Dozen on it.  Also got 30 Seconds Over Tokyo and The Sound Of Music (yes I know, most are probably laughing, but think about it, it is an interesting perspective about the coming to power of the Third Reich in Austria), and of course the classic The Longest Day.  I was also given a copy of U571 years ago....honestly I find it only mildly good, but it was free, so.

What I still plan on adding to my collection:

Piece of Cake (this was a 6 part "Masterpiece Theater" miniseries that I saw as a kid based on a fictional squadron in the Battle Of Britain and which itself is based on a book of the same title.)

Battle of the Bulge (yeah, historically not the greatest, but it is still awesome!)

Memphis Belle (LOVED this one as a teen!!!!)

Schindlers List

Das Boot

Defiance

The Dam Busters

Flags of our fathers/Letters from Iwo

Empire of the sun

They were expendable

Stalag 17

Heaven Knows Mr. Allsion (this one bugged me for so long because I thought it was Cary Grant, not Robert Mitchum, who played the lead, and I could not remember the name of the movie, so googling "Cary Grant movie with nun on island in world war 2" got me nothing.)

Merril's Marauders

Objective Burma

Destination Tokyo

Downfall

The Enemy Down Below

The Sand of Iwo

Tora! Tora! Tora!

Midway

The Pacific (the mini series from HBO.....to be honest I was not super thrilled with it, but now the price of the series is cheap enough where I will shell out for it, but not back when it first came out for $60+)

The Guns of Navarrone

The Sand Pebbles

The Big Red One

Operation Petticoat (another great Cary Grant movie!)

The Whackiest Ship in the Army

12 O'clock High

Enemy At the Gates

Bridge on the river Kwai

There is a several others I can't think of off the top of my head (I have a list somewhere around here written down), but I think you get the general hint that I have a nice bit of viewing pleasure to come over the next year or so...... Wink

Lots of favorites in here, too many to rename them. When the wife is away, the old war movies replay!

One of my "best of" hasn't been mentioned, and it may be hard to find. Title "84 Charlie Mopic", about a cameraman and a green Lt. that accompanies a seasoned group of "boonie rats" on a mission. All done in hand held film format, very compelling tale of a group of guys doing the day to day work of the Vietnam conflict.

Worth a look if you can get a copy!
