"Greyhound" WWII Movie with Tom Hanks
Posted by GAF on Friday, March 6, 2020 6:41 AM

I haven't seen much concerning this movie, but thought some of the "ship" people might have been following it.

Apparently based upon C.S. Forester's novel "The Good Shepherd", it's the story of a destroyer captain on convoy duty in the north Atlantic.  Tom Hanks stars as the Captain.

The Ship Guys will have to comment on the accuracy of the ships.  Big Smile

I've been waiting for this.  I HAS to be better than Pearl Harbor.  Hanks has been involved since the beginning.   It is indeed based on CS Forester's "Good Shepherd".  Hanks is a first-time convoy commander engaging German wolfpack submarines

A lot of it was filmed onboard the USS KIDD in Baton Rouge.   So you won't see a lot of CGI ships, at least not for the main players.

Some of the nitpickers on another site have griped about a square-bridge Fletcher in the Atlantic in 1942.  Come on - it that all you got! (At least they didn't CGI a different class/round-bridge Fletcher and have the exterior shots of a KIDD square-bridge. Continuity!)

A CS Forester novel, and Tom Hanks-that's a formula for a good movie!  I don't see many movies in the theaters anymore, but I will make a point of seeing this on the big screen.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" was better than "Pearl Harbor".

Thanks for the heads-up. The trailer looks good, and anything with Elizabeth Shue and well, you can count me in!

Should be interesting. The book was not about action as much as it was about the hours upon hours of merciless repetitition of staying on station and protecting the convoy, with the constant fear of dozing off and missing a clue of an impending attack.  So it should be a good movie and could complement a night watching with Das Boat.

Hi;

      Well, based on the little previews it looks like they got a "Square Bridge" right. Maybe. We'll see. Now there's a movie I'll have to see! Remember a lot does look right, as I did Spend time on a Gearing in WesPac early in my Military career.

    They surely got the ship's movement through the water right! I was told by an old chief that the " Gearing" was an enlarged improved model over the Fletchers as All Gun Destroyers.

There is that.

    I thought the same thing. Even so with the " Hanks" maybe I caan overlook the Artistic license of using The Kidd. Does anyone know of a round bridge Fletcher in existence Anywhere?

The story sounds a little similar to "The Cruel Sea".  That was a good novel, too.

Yes. No there isn't.

Which is kind of silly as the ship in the book was a Mahan class DD.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I suspect that this will be a good companion piece for “Das Boot”.

I wanted to see if anyone had a chance to view this film yet?  It was supposed to be in theaters on July 10th, but they released it to Apple TV since the theaters remain closed.

If anyone has Apple TV, let us know.

Meanwhile, I figure it will be on pay per view soon, what with the pandemic and all.

I have seen it, and I thought it was so-so.  It seemed to be lacking something, but I can't put my finger on what.

Otherwise I think it was a in interesting subject, and think it is worth a viewing.

Good flick - it's on Apple TV+ which you can trial for 7 days free (just remember to cance Stick out tongue ).  Pretty tense movie from start to finish and as I have not read or studied anything on surface ships combating submarines I found it very interesting - tactics that seem crazy.  I reccomend watching this one for sure.  Especially given the fact that we don't get many war movies out of Hollywood - gotta thank Hanks for his interest in history.  We've had a few lately which I find refreshing - only so much rom-com one can watch Indifferent

Thanks,

John

Just what I was planning to do.  Big Smile

I must admit, this has me wishing to see a remake of "The Enemy Below", though I doubt it would be as good as the original.

Hi;

     I know this is a late response to what your said in the Greyhounds thread. I watched " Captain Phillips" There may have been some truthful moments. I am not one to criticize.

     Well much anyway. Tom Hanks to me was flat in this one. AND bridge action even without Pirates is busier than what was portrayed. I have NEVER captained a " Box Ship" but seems to me there wasn't enough crew action going on. They all have work hours. I would also imagine they are supposed to be checking tension on those boxes regularly. After all, the ship moves and flexes constantly. Phillips may have been a reserved guy like Air Travel's Captain " Sully" but somehow it was almost boring.
