I was retired at 57 due to issues from my service. Now on a Veterans Affairs pension and my Navy super. It provides pretty well for Jill and I as any of my medical expenses are covered. Work? What's work? I have done a lot of community volunteer work over the years, but now I've even given that away. This is Jill and I time and I don't miss work one little bit! I used to have trouble working out what day it is,but then I realised that they all end in 'day', so who caresToastToast

Happy belated birthday Rob!! I beat you by a day, 65 on the 17th.

I long to live in a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned

Retired in '98 at the ripe old age of 58 after 36 years working for the same company in many different jobs in three different sections of the company. Got a tip from a friend of my dads who was in the right place at the right time. I got a golden parachute and retired. A few months later, the company was sold and many of my friends got laid off with nothing to show for all their time there. Was looking forward to the easy life.

After about 6 months, was out looking for a part time job. First one was delivering car parts and equipment. Lasted about 2 years. Second was as a lab tech at a vet school. Fell into it by accident and worked out well as I was "highly overqualified for the job" as a result of the job I retired from. It was a piece of cake. Came and went as I pleased and worked alone when other techs had to go to classes or meetings out of town. That turned out to be why I quit. Big boss said I could not work alone because of insurance problem. If I went full time, no problem. So, I quit. I was ready for total retirement this time. We rented a 34' RV for 6 weeks and travelled across the country. Been trying to do it again but something always pops up to delay it. Also planning a trip down the Mississippi in a stern wheeler very soon.

Don't know what day it is and couldn't care less except for those annoying doctors visits.

OH, I'm building a 20" model of a paddle wheeler so there is always a reminder of the trip in front of us.

I retired from aviation in 2020, got lazy and marginally bored....money became a concern. Went back to work part time in an office, did ok first season, sobered up and realized that office was not for me. Niw I work part time as a cashier in my little town gas station. Get my social neefs met, get recoil therapy when I have ammo, tinker not often enough.

Guess I really ain't ready to completely retire either.

    BTW HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY Rob.

I guess I could say I got a little taste of retirement in 2019 and 2020 when I was off work here and there while I recovered from the numerous cancer-related surgeries I had during that time.  I found that about a week and a half was about all I could tolerate for down-time, so in the most extreme example of that, I was out making in-person contact with my customers a week and a half after having major abdominal surgery that had me on 6 weeks of short-term disability leave.  The rest of that time off I was doing research and selling avionics upgrades.  The whole not being able to tell one day from the next thing was also a problem for me.  Heh...not sure I'd be able to handle retirement.

"Got truly bored and didn't have a purpose day in and day out."

I can see how that can happen and I often think it might happen to me too. I guess I won't know until I get there.

I don't know. The freedom to come and go would be exhilarating for me. Right now, I feel like a prisoner. Long hours at work, for the most part because of staff shortages, it is tough to even take a half day off. I am so in the mood to take a road trip west. Big sky allows my spriit to breath.

I don't see that happening probably not until I retire. Heck. It was so bad in 2021 that summer blew by and I was barely able to experience it. It is awful, and 2022 is already like 2021. Somehow, I have to find a way to live a little.

Hi Rob;

A belated Happy Birthday! Now as far as the retired thing goes. Guys I guess I am , or was, Too romantic . I spent in two cases  the retirement savings on two of the sweetest, Bad stuff and all, On my late wives comfort in their last months. I guess I was considered foolish. One for 43 yrs. and the other for 7. So it's S.S. and V.A. pensions for me. 'Salright though. The Memories I have you Cannot buy. They Both put up with this eccentric old coot.

When I was younger, after Cars , there was Planes then Boats to fix up and restore. Both women got totally involved in all of it including making my money Talk and Work for me. Now I'se broker than the proverbial screen door. To much slammin' I guess. Modeling ? They loved it and supported the habit. So I got them to thank for at least a reasonably good stash. They both always said  "Better Workbench than Bar"!

Since I retired July 1st last year I have to check the calendar to see what day it is Stick out tongue

A friend of mine who retired a few years back said I only know it's Sunday because thats when the big newspaper shows up.

Not so far removed from working that I don't appreciate that Friday afternoon feeling.  Have a great weekend.

ive been on Short term disability since December 6th, hernia surgery, then three days after getting releaspiped to return to work, I picked up Covid, and spent ten days in the hospital on oxygen, so the days all sort of run together for me too.  I only know which day is which because of the wife and kids' work and school schedules!

MAN....I CANT WAIT TO BE ABLE TO GET BACK TO WORK!!!

I retired in mid 2011 after 24+ years of active duty and almost 4 years of Army Guard time while in college. I was 47 and did the retired thing for nearly a year.

Got truly bored and didn't have a purpose day in and day out. On a whim, I applied for a job at GE making appliances. Easy money and anyone with a work ethic sticks out. Expected to work there maybe six months. In August it will be ten years.

My first retirement gives me quite a comfortable income. Now I'm midway towards another.

Sure glad I was able to retire at the relatively young age of 59,it's been four years out of work and enjoying every day of it.

Still maintain contact with many of my ex co-workers at the Gas and Electric Company, very happy that I missed the zoo during the worst of Covid.

I was going to retire last year, but to help family out, I’m going another year. I did tell my wife that all big projects will wait til retirement, so I’m spending at least 4 hours hobbying every Sat and Sun. I will be 69 1/2 when the time comes, and the only concern I have is to have a good workout program set up beforehand.  My active job really does help me feel better, even though it is tiresome.

Real G
Yes TGIF.  But nowadays I just spend it at home, recovering from the work week.  Last night I had some leftover lasagne

Sounds like my typical day too. The workforce is so stretched, for those still working, the pace is insane. Add in the insanity of supply shortages... it's all looking to snap. The company I work for is just one or two resignations away from disaster. And that is what is happening in our industry. People are quitting or retiring because they have had it.

Anyhow, one foot in front of the next until my feet stop working.

Goldhammer,

I think in the last few years we have moved past insane and moved on to stupid/ludicrous.  I'm just wondering where the tipping point is, when all this stuff implodes on itself.

But the grass is tall, the sun is out, and it's a nice day for yard work over here.  No snow boots required.  Smile

Most of the world has been insane for the past 50 years, and it gets worse every hour.

Only thing the mower is good for over here right now is to trim down the ice ridgesBig Smile

Bakster, the world HAS gone insane.  You have gone sane in an insane world, according to the wise words of The Tick.

Yes TGIF.  But nowadays I just spend it at home, recovering from the work week.  Last night I had some leftover lasagne and watched a couple of episodes of Kamen Rider V3.  It looks like Destron has hiring problems like the rest of the world, as they keep bringing in new bad guys to kill V3.  But they all fail and get replaced.  Kind of like the time when Japan had "revolving door" prime ministers.

And happy birthday Rob!

Now if you will excuse me, the lawnmower is calling.

Happy birthday Rob.  I hope everything went your way yesterday.

Thanks, typical day at work; not enough people working so instead of managing the line, I spent most of it doing vacant jobs on the line. Nothing like shooting a thousand plus ground screws into the top of a refrigerator all night long.

It's a good day for me, it is (was) my birthday on Friday. Of course, I spent it at work, but got some gifts and pizza from coworkers.

Happy Birthday, Rob!  Take some time and be sure to celebrate it. Don't let it pass without spoiling yourself a little. Make it special. It only comes once a year.

It's weird, I sort of miss work but then again everyday there was a Monday, sometimes two at the same time.  The last place I worked actually had a sort of retirement plan for us.  Previously I worked for his brother and he did all he could to make money for himself, if it was at the cost of employees..it happend.  Raises were rare and one time I asked about one and he walked out laughing saying that things were tough all over.  When his brother left and started his own business most of the customers moved to his company.  When he was ready he called me over to work for him.

Conditions were better, a raise would show up once in a while, not every year but every few years or so,  Still with the IRA it was better.  That helped to get a used car when one of ours died.

Now we live on our S.S. and my V.A. disabilities.  If it wasn't for the V.A. we would be really screwed.

But anyway, have a happy birthyday.

So, I cut out of work early, 4:30, to get a seat at the bar for some food and drink. What do I find? All the familiar faces, they all beat me to it.

Don't these retired folk have something to do? Instead, I had wait for an open seat. Maybe, if I  Ieave work at noon, I will get a seat.

Dagnabbit. Someday that will be me planted in a seat.

Some things about retirement

- Every day is Saturday!

- What doesn't get done today can get done tomorrow

- Learn to live within a budget

- Strive to have all large expenses paid off prior to retiring

- Have a hobby or side activity

- Try to exercise and stay as fit as possible

- And you are so right regarding saving and planning

- The rest is making good choices when challenges come your way.

- Oh! and have a trust created instead of a will. Wills still have to go through probate which ties up the monies and costs more for your loved ones, but trusts do not.

- And another, look into a ROTH IRA early in your career instead of a traditional retirement account, it will save you thousands in the long run or conversion.

I could go on, but you get the picture....Retirement is normally earned and can really only be enjoyed if properly planned for.

Bakster

I look forward to the day I dont know what day it is.  Lol

Congrats on retirement!

I hear you on that.  The people who handle the money say age 68 for me.  16 short years away.  Lesson to all you younger modelers- Save your money and start early.

So true.  I am about 4 years away, if I survive until then. My luck that the world has gone crazy in my waning years. Or maybe, I just went crazy. Hehe.

I have a hard time remembering it's Friday when I know it is.  Have to take a look at the digital watch to verify.

Well, I will help you. Its Friday, and thank goodness.Stick out tongue
