McDonalds new drink pricing
Posted by JohnnyK on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 12:48 PM

I have been paying $1.00 at McDonalds for a large drink for a long, long time. Today, the price for a large drink was $1.49. An increase of 49%!!! That's nuts! I live in the Chicago area. Is this price increase a local thing, or is it country wide?

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Not sure if its just local or country wide, but they still have free re-fills, don't they?  Big Smile

Probably caused by the general increases in inflation over the past 16 months, more than anything else.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Go to Wendy's and ask for a "Senior Drink."  It's free, along with all the refills you want.  Coffee, too, but you have to ask for it.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

There is the Big Mac index, so oddly enough McDonalds is an economic indicator :)

My mom in Fla. always ordered a "Senior Drink" from McD's. It was $1 and the cup was their second smallest drink cup (only the Happy Meal cup was smaller).

I told her all sizes were $1, whether it was large, medium or small. She was paying the same for less drink. She started ordering a large sweet tea after that.

But, yeah, complaining about the cost of a soft drink at a fast food restaurant is a first world problem. I once ordered a large drink from the Burger King next to a local high school. The girl made sure to let me know it wasn't a dollar like it was a McDonald's. I said okay. It turned out to be like $2.59, two and a half times more.

They're doing you a favor. Soda pop is one of the worse things you can put into your body, they contain sucralose which
  • alters glucose and insulin levels.
  • increases risk of digestive problems.
  • alters gut health and damages the GI tract.
  • kills probiotics.
  • may play a role in certain cancers.
  • generates toxic compounds when heated.
  • And a lot more.
I haven't drank any carbonated drinks since 2005.

Burritos at the taco truck downstairs just went from $ 2.89 to $ 3.49. Yikes, 20% price hike.

But yeah, better to avoid soft drinks.

I started drinking diet as Tojo said and have lost 3.5lb/1.6kg over the last two weeks. Would love to cut down even more but water gives me a bad case of Montezuma's Revenge if you know what I mean. Is there anything better to drink?

I looked at their menu board today. Their menu still says that a soft dring is a $1.00. HOWEVER, if you look really close you will notice a very small SM next to the $1.00.

Heh...I got hooked on Diet Coke because it pretty much neutralized my nausea while I was on chemo a couple of years ago.  Should probably stop drinking it too since there's no good reason to do so at this point.  DM is definitely right, its all terrible for you...but then again, pretty much everything else at McDonalds is poison too.  The main thing I drink during the day though is either iced herbal tea or water.  Can't deal with caffeine when I'm under stress at work.  Gamera, you might look into making some iced herbal tea to drink in place of soda or plain water.  Celestial Seasonings has a pretty good variety.

Never mind the $1.49 soda, my car's "drink" just set me back $60!  But I hear it's actually worse in places on the mainland.  Usually we have the highest gas prices in the nation.

Enjoy your soda, JohnnyK; at least it is still affordable!

I remember, back in the mid 1970's, I could get three tacos and a small drink for a buck at Taco Bell. I think with tax it jumped up to $1.03. At Jack in the Box, I could get a hamburger, a taco, and a medium drink for a dollar, including the tax.

Dang, how the times have changed, or I should probably say; dang, I'm getting old!!

My "best value" meal was at the university's campus center cafeteria, where a slice of pepperoni pizza was 75 cents.  I used to buy two and a soda for around $3.  This was back in 1985.

Costco - Big hotdog and a bottomless drink $1.50.  Best deal ever and hasn't changed.

Thanks,

I've probably drank about six cases of beer and 2 quarts of Amoretta Desorrona Liqueur in my whole life (stopped all that many years ago) and I have never smoked (anything) despite all the bullying in high school to "have a camel" back in the mid sixties.

All fast food hamburger joints are history to me.

I work out at the gym ~ a lot..... going on 33 years now.

I decided I wanted to lose 20 pounds last February, so... it took me a year.
It was worth it. I went from a tight 34" to a good fitting 32" in my 529 Low rise Levi's.

I eat once a day around 8 pm.
I listen to the TV while working on a model.
(You actually get so involved you don't realize you're getting hungry).
I go to bed around 3 am.
I'm up between 11 am or noon and mix a quart bottle of my "special"
                            *drink*

(I sip on it all day, even in a restaurant).
I go pay bills and do the normal things.....
or maybe some target practice or back home with the models.

*The drink is my own personal mix, seems to work great.

Might seem gross but here it is.
All mixed up in a one quart bottle.

Strawberry flavor,10 packs to a box.

I use one 3 gram pack in each bottle to give more flavor.
Plus 5.0 grams of strawberry flavored creatine monohydrate.
Plus 5.0 grams of strawberry flavored L-Citrulline Malate.
One ounce of vinegar.
Sorry to say JohnnyK, but fill it with bottled water and shake it up.

Might need to get used to it, but it isn't so bad when you adjust the ingredients.
And it won't happen overnight. You'd have to stick with this lifestyle for at least as long as I have.

One guy at the gym asked me what I was drinking and I told him.
He said he would rather drink cat pi%%.
So I asked him if he had ever drank any cat pi%% and he said "no".
Then I asked him, then how would you know?
No reply....,
just a weird smile and an eyeroll.

In my area, minimum wage was raised nearly 100% in one jump.  The fast food industry is not one with a realy big profit margin, and wages are a large part of costs.

Hi?

You talking to me TB?  If so, my car maxes out at around12 gallons.  I know trucks and European cars tend to have enormous fuel tanks, but Japanese cars generally don't.  My old 1983 Honda Accord could take only 8 gallons!  Back in the day, a fill up cost less than $20, even in Hawaii.
