Nope, there were two of that plane originally built, and a further two modified examples as well.  It was then put into production by Clément-Bayard, and 50 more were built.  The plane I am looking for had only one built.  The plane I am looking for also served with an air force.

Clement-Bayard monoplane 1913. Not ugly but “unrefined”.

Two things wrong with this guess--it lacks the very low power engine I mentioned, and it was built before WWI.....the plane I am looking for was test flown by a pilot who had previously served on the side of Germany in WWI and became an ace.

1 of them was owned by the owner of another aircraft manufacturer as his personal aircraft. This aircraft was later pressed into military service.

More of this aircraft were not built because of an abundance of its predecessor and a need for another type of aircraft.

A captured civilian variant was used extensively by the enemy in its intended role.

This type could have been a record maker.  Instead, the first of the type was used to greet a record maker and its pilot got a job. The airline world smelt the coffee and the type sold in quantity.

There were 5 versions of this aircraft though someone who didn't know might think there were more if they only saw the last version marked with its type number.

Two engines choices were offered for the bulk of the production but the last eight aircraft had a third type.

One of this type went missing without trace when attempting a"first" .  Another crashed carrying a famous lion.

OK, this aircraft was named after a mythical creature & over 100 were built, it had a short service life & only had one confirmed kill to it's name.

It was part of a concept which was unsuccessful & also short lived, the concepts "advantage" being its downfall.

Yes Phil, the Roc - one of the "turret fighters" which had the advantage of a turret, but the disadvantage of the added weight & drag.....

Only two aircraft were built of this specific type name though many more were built for just one user's specification and were called something else.  The first one was built then dismantled, moved and rebuilt before its first flight.

These aircraft were designed and built by a company which was taken over by another - which produced the production run derived from the second of the two after this had been modified.

The addition of seats to the production derivatives gave thousands their first trip overseas although few really wanted to make the trip.  One of the derivatives narrowly avoided ending up in the pink!

Well some expected its future to be orange!  However, back to the original two aircraft, the name of which is what we are really looking for - though they shared a name, they had different type numbers.

The second of these aircraft, and all the derivatives, received a better engine from the original engine manufacturer and reverse pitch props which gave it and the derivatives a stunning STOL performance for the size of aircraft.
