Actually, the time frame for a "blank" question or answer is not supposed to be as few as 48 hours.

When I first suggested this forum, I then later added a couple of simple rules so no one could unfairly come in and possibly "hang the forum out to dry" (whether the reason is valid or a hostile gesture by an antogonistic troll) by not responding.

Since I got tired of re-posting the basic guidelines for when the forum becomes "open" to anyone else, I finally took the time to revise my opening post at the beginning of this string that I origionally posted in '05.

What bi-plane fighter, designed for carrier operations had it's landing gear mounted on the top wing? It was an operational aircraft... and had fine performance for it's day.

Curtiss F9C-2 Sparrowhawk, it could catch the trapeze hanging from the "carrier" (either the Macon, or Akron) and be lifted up inside

3. Scoring 6 kills in one mission, August 6, 1944

Bonus: his official score according to wikipedia is 26.83, including his one confirmed in the PTO, that might be why squadron says 25.83, just counting ETO kills.

This post is not to answer the latest question but to comment on the fact that the Sparrowhawk was the answer to T_Terrific's question in April last year.

 I suppose this thread has been running so long now that this will happen again. I know it can be very difficult coming up with something to stump all you knowledgable guys.

Big Smile [:D]What WWII experimental plane had a pratt and whitteney 2000 HP and was hoped to reached the speed of 507 mph but instead went 377mph. It had bad stability issues so it was canceled.

The Ascender had an in-line. ...the Allison 1710 V12...

Unless some yay-hoo built a version that I don't know about with a radial! (completely possible)

I'm sorry. When I read the question, I saw "Stability issues .. 377mph", then I saw a hint that the P-56 was close.

Correct, my friend. That being one of the main clues I'm tracking on... but the mainEST clue is the expected speed of OVER 500 miles per hour...

...so it's gonna be a late war design... with a radial... or two... HMmmm

I'm stumped. The P-56 fits... BUT it's not a Curtiss machine! Dang!
