Didn't the Ki 61 become the Ki 100 when it's inline engine was replaced by a radial engine? I seem to remember (and I could be very wrong) there were a number of engineless airframes built when the engine plant got destroyed by B-29s, a rush program was made to fit the radial. And it was a far better A/C than the K-61

Japanese airplane? Ki 61?

Looks good, but can you help us define the "engine change"?

Impressive personality image, but, no airplane.

Maybe you need personal counselling.

This forum is about "Aircraft" not stupid, silly dog images , thank you.

TT, the P-36 to P-40 was a prewar (for the USA) conversion. And also something of a natural experimentaction.

The FW-190D  was a continuation of an earlier search for better high altitude performance with the 190 family. The radial A series stayed in production at the same time as the Dora.

One more easy/obvious  one to go before I think anyone picks mine...

No, The Mustang was a design experiment to try another engine of the same configuration in the airframe. This was more rushed, and more pronounced of a change in powerplants.

As a side note, at lower altitudes, the Allison engined Mustangs were every bit as hot as their Packard Merlin powered cousins. The Merlin ga better high altitude performance and longer legs.

Ok. This aircraft was based off of a proven design. But wartime circumstances resulted in the mating of a different powerplant, differing in both arrangement and cooling) that resulted in a far superior performing aircraft. The change in power plants was not a result of standard design experimentatio.

You know, my Craptop makes the same damn typo's!

This looks like a cool multi-choice question, my answers are:

  1. P-36 to P-40-radial to the water-cooled more streamlined version-a no-brainer. A very successful fighter/bomber.
  2. P-51 Allison to P-51 Rolls-Royce Merlin. British engine actually improved by American manufacturing techniques.
  3. The Foke-Wulf 190 to the 190-D. Go figure, like the '40, worked better, which begs me to question Kurt Tank's so-called, copy-cat "brilliance". Kinda "behind the curve" for me.

Thanks for the question!

Off the top of my head, no. I would have to look it all up, but I do recall reading somewhere about the Deuce being influnced by Lippisch's design work. But IIRC so was the F4D and F7U.

Second generation fighter jet directly influenced by Lippisch?

F-102

I haven't ever read that. Do you have a source? I think project Project MX-1554 is pretty interesting stuff, but not the one I am thinking of.

Sorry, Tarpey, but Morrison got it with "Andrei Tupolev. The aircraft was the TU-2."

Thank you for trying. Feel welcome to post anytime. Big Smile

I PM'd him to let you and Morrison know, but I think he is still resting-up from having a new experienceWink

Not Sikorsky...Didn't he leave during the Revolution. The man I'm looking for is probably more famous for the (Big) planes he and his design team made during the Cold War.  The plane he designed during WWII was a medium "Bomber"

T-Terrific: That's the plane he lead the design team before WWII. He was jailed and sentenced in 1940 by Stalin. While imprisoned he was "asked?" to design a warplane. Still looking for his name and the plane he designed. He's quite famous and a three-time "Hero of Russia?" or something like that...

Wow, a "printing-press war Bomber", not an actual "Bomb-War" bomber.

I thought Sikorsky got outta there before the war!

Gotta think on this one...
