I recall reading or seeing a scientific report somewhere that the human vision/neural connection to the brain is such that the brain "fills in" something on the order of 30-40% of what we "see" instead of running at full processor power all the time with things that are readily familiar/common. They mentioned in the report that this is one of the reasons why motion at our peripheral vision will often attract our mental "attention"...because it's moving and something "new" to be processed. My point with all this is that maybe we spend so much time around our workbench and build areas that things like tools, parts, etc. that are part of the familiar "landscape" can and do disappear for this reason and it's only when you start to actively search and focus that they magically reappear, sometimes right under your nose. It's as good an excuse as any and hey, it's science to boot! Laugh [(-D]

Ditto... I lost the vertical stab for a P-6E I was working on... After I spent about two hours of cutting, shaping, and sanding, making a new part out of sheet-stock and gluing it in place, I found the kit part. Where? In the damn box...

i couldn't find my paint mixer. looked everywhere. i will have boxes of a model for when i sit outside and build, one model in my study, etc. so my tools van be spread out. finally went up the lhs and bought a new one after looking for 2 hours. found mine 15 minutes after i got home as i figured i would. took it back and bought the new tamiya 3.7cm aa gun mit crew.

just got a new one today. was looking for my olive drab paint that i had yesturday taken out but decided i didnt need it until today. well, i look in the exact spot and nope...its not there!! well, where is it i muttered...then i looked everywhere, on the floor, under the bench, in drawers, every single place. i even looked at the same place i put it 4 more times and still....NOTHING!!! after debating to go out and get more olive drab paint, i finally got so irritated that i yelled out loud "ok, God, if your through f-

with me, please put it back so i can finish what i need to do"....i look down immediately after that and in the spot i just looked 4 other times...there it was staring me in the face!!!! true...100% story...no lie. somehow i think its far more than just getting old!!!

I have spent so much time looking for tools that are right in front of me on my bench I think if the US government were to make uniform camo from a photo of my bench, a GI could walk up to the enemy and shoot him in the head with a hand gun.

I've noticed that more and more over the last few years that I spend a lot of time wondering into a room, looking around and then asking "what the heck did I come in here for?" and then wondering out - only to go back in 5 minutes later to get what I wanted in the first place.

And my wife thinks it's funnier than hell when I spend 15 minutes tearing a room apart screaming "have you seen my glasses?" And then discover them hooked in the neck of my T-shirt - now when I see her grin I just look down. (she informed me years ago if my Butt wasn't attached, I'd lose it)

Oh, those are just the gremlins. Appease them with a lost part (one you weren't going to use, anyway, but don't let them know.) Drop said part somewhere, or tweezerpult it (even better). Search frantically for five minutes, cussing vociferously. The gremlins will be appeased and give your tool back. Works every time. But you have to be careful. If you lose a part you need, you'll wind up getting a tool back that you lost a week ago, and just bought a replacement. Since you now have two tools, the gremlins will feel perfectly justified keeping the vital part.

It's nice to know I'm not alone, and I think Triarius is on to something.

I've accidentally knocked parts/tools into an inappropriately placed trash can. Didn't realize it until a month later and by then... to late.

What I really hate is when I'm down on all 4's looking for something and my Dog comes over to see "What's Up". I Love her, but they are called Huskies for a reason.

Anyway, Good Luck with the gettn' old thing.

Here's one for you. After looking all over the workbench area and beyond, I finally found the lower torso of an aircrew figure where I had left it to dry after painting it: on a clip not 12 inches in front of me. Dark blue against a black background is great camoflage.
