Even though you may not like it, the results of a paint spray can can never, never compare to the control, finesse, and quality of finish you will get from an airbrush. If all you want to do is slather your model with paint, sure its overkill, but if you wish to start improving your skills as a modeler, then it is essential that you pick up that airbrush and start practicing.

Agreed. Once upon a time I used to be a spray painter. These days, I don't touch a rattlecan save for the occasional clear or primer coat (and even those I prefer to airbrush).

Others have spoken to control and paint flow and finish, and I agree with every point, but I'd also note that spray cans get paint EVERYWHERE. And that paint is extremely toxic. With my airbrush, especially now that I'm spraying mostly Vallejo acrylics, I don't need even a rudimentary spray booth. The other night I had the baby monitor sitting six inches from the Dauntless while I was spraying, and it didn't get even a speck of paint dust on it. Try that with a can.

uumm...I'd put myself,, a good 5... possibly a six.. I surprise myself sometimes,, and also get mad at myself when I make a rookie booboo.. but thats the name of the game.. I'm the most happy when another person looks at my build and says... " hey.. thats cool",, or , "I like how u did X".. I sometimes get more satisfaction from the comments, than the trophies..

There's also the dude who won't say anthing,, but spends 10 minutes scrutinizing your build, but doesn't tell you anthing bad.. lol.. I'll take that as a compliment..

as for cans VS airbrush... I still use both,,, cans for large areas, and for clear cotes and dull cotes,, airbrush for fine details, non can colors... etc..

Each has its place once you learn all the techniques...

Hmmmm...Kinda hard to rate myself right now. I just restarted building after a very long hiatus. I haven't finished my first kit but I'd say i'm a 2-3 right now. I like my progress right now, but that could change as I go.

While I would not call myself a beginner, I am improving. Maybe a 3 or 4? In just one year after finding FSM, my skills drastically improved! I used to just snap pieces off trees, slop glue on the pieces with out worrying about seams, etc. and spray on paint willy-nilly. I think these two pictures might illustrate the leaps I made in just a year:

I went from this

Now that I'm here, where am I??

Let's see..  a d20 skill-check roll, adjusted for CHA yields a solid 2.  (wait, wrong game....)

I'd probably rate a solid 2.5 or 3.
