Earlier this week he took off from Dulles to fly to Frankfurt.  He sat in front of the computer for over eight hours..at one time he called me as I was driving home from work that he was frustrated because he miscalculated his fuel, so he had to land at Heathrow to bring more on....adding an additional 2 hours....

 

Tell him that he'll have plenty of time to recover during the 30-day un-paid suspension he'll get from the airline for blowing his fuel calcs on an over-water flight...

I once did a marathon at the model table.

The woman was taking a 5 day trip to New York with her family who I can only tolerate in small doses. Before she left I hit the hobby shop. I picked up all the paint I would need, some putty, and for the hell of it an F-8 Crusader in 1/72. Which I didn't plan on building that soon, but I did anyway.

I dropped her at the airport and it begins. The time I told her I couldn't get off to go with her, I actually had off. For 5 days straight I didn't really move. I ordered pizza, I tore through movies on netflix like nobodies business and I built day and night, 16-18 hours at a stretch. I slept on the couch, and I only took breaks when I needed to wait on dry time. People thought I was legitimately sick or something. The neighbors didn't even see me outside except to pull the car in and out of the paint shop/garage.

At the end I had completed:

Hasegawa P-3C in 1/72

Hasegawa KA-3D 1/72

Hasegawa F-8 (which is displayed about to refuel from the KA-3D)

Tamiya F-15C 1/48 (converted to an A) with the Two Mikes ASAT missile and appropriate decals.

Revell F-4D 1/48 with custom markings.

 

At the end I was mostly pissed I wasted some good drinking time. But when I have the free time with nobody bugging me I just gotta build.

I can only dream....I sometimes picture heaven like this....

Lol, thanks buddy! I'm gonna print one of these up.

Got 2 more 8 hour sessions under my belt. Custom making parts, then installing them. Not fun in the summer time. I need to get one of these red-azz certificates modified with my name on it and printed!

I don't tear them all down, Doog.. Just the majority... There's stuff like the Bill Mauldin dios I've done that I keep, along with a few others that are situations from my own military career...  I've got three cats, so stuff happens, lol...

   Most of the others get torn down because I get sick of looking at them, or I've decided that the dio I had in mind for them was never gonna get built...   My space is too limited for "shelfers",  so if they don't get on a diorama within say, six months or so, they find their way into the "boneyard"...

But "Willie & Joe" stuff will never die, lol...

I'm really curious, Hans--as the spokesman for the "Build "Em and Break "Em Apart" wing of the forum, I wonder why you would even bother repairing them at all? It seems to go completely against your stated mantra?

I just moved too. Damage an E100, Wittman's Tiger, a 1/72 Jagdpanther, and my ol' Hetzer. Nothing too major or unfixable, but I curse myself for not being more thorough!

No.. But that's what the "Pause" key is for...

Speaking of which... We had a guy in the CAF unit named "No-Neck", and his favorite thing to do with new squaddies was have them wrap their lips around the "Secondary Pitot Tube" and give it a slow, gentle blow to "reset and test the diaphram"... It wasn't a pitot tube though, it was the pilot's relief tube drain..

What airspeed and fuel consumption control do you have in that game?

As much as I want, or you can set it to automatic, but I like to do my own fuel management and mixture/throttle/prop settings..Fuel consumption is pretty accurate in the game... The Pilot's Operating Handbook charts call a Max Cruise Setting at 25,000 ASL while maintaining 325 MPH TAS...  That means about 85 GPH which is too much for an eight hour flight... It's also way too fast for the bombers plugging along at 150 knots, so I maintain a gentle series of "S"-turns over the formation from the "Purple Heart Corner" aircraft out to about the lead's 11 O'Clock and three miles, and back the same distance...

Set-up is for "Economy Cruise" at 210 knots, with about 26 inches and 1800 rpm, IIRC... Translates to about 60 GPH...  Carrying a full load of fuel in the tanks, plus 150 gallons in the drops.. I burn the drops, then the fuselage tank to about 2/3rds to 1/2, then switch to wing tanks, going back & forth every 15 minutes or so...  8 1/2 hr  flight with 30 minutes reserve and giving myself 30 minutes at Full Military Power and 5 minutes of WEP (War Emergency Power) makes for a tense final 50 miles on the return leg.. 

About the time I hit the French Coast I'm at 27,000, power back to minimum cruise (125 mph @ 16 inches and 1500 rpm) and start my decent to 5,000 when I cross the Dover Cliffs... She stalls at about 95 mph clean, so there's plenty of control authority at 125..  Basically, I just let her sink.. Unless I'm damaged, that is... Then I maintain as much altitude as I can muster from her going across the water...

Occasionally, I`ll get a call-out for work...some drunk will take out a telephone pole or a nut on a backhoe will tear a cable in half, and ,if it`s a BIG cable, like a 3600 pair, I may be there 24 + hours.

My bench marathons were back in the "oxycotin days"...12-16 hours...couldn`t do anything else..lol. Now that I`m not taking them anymore, I have to get up and walk around every hour or so or my back starts killing me! Unfortunately, my back isn`t gettin` any better...hurting as I`m typing this...may have to start up the pain meds again. There`s good and bad in that...good / get a lot of time at the bench..bad / get a lot of time at the bench and nothin` else gets done.

The only time I ever spent that much time doing something was when I started at the paper mill "flying" a Yale 2400 tow motor as a "pile-it".  We had a fire out in the main shark and 5500 rolls of paper had to be moved to get to all the bottom water damaged rolls.  27 hours in the seat.

Thankee, Herr Major... I also managed to set an entire diorama on fire with resin once too.. Added too much catalyst to the resin, and it generated so much heat that the Kingfisher sitting in it caught fire!

I had new meds and was really in the grove though... Only time I ever came that close to getting a red azz before was sitting my computer and flying a MS CFS2 P-51 from England to Berlin (in real time) on-line...  No auto-pilot either... Just well-trimmed so I could fly hands & feet-off for a little stretch at a time... That was eight and a half hours...

Damned Forts are SLOWWWWWW...  Shoulda flown one of the bombers so I coulda got up and walked around, lol...  

Yes, even a B-29 or P-38 is slow at optimim fuel consumption.

I do know that she ended up getting a flight on "FiFi" for free, lol...  I'da made the call m'self, but alas.. I was just a crewdawg, not the aircraft commander...  He looked pretty pleased with himself for about a week after that tour...

That's just wrong, and on SO many levels... But I'll trade ya that one for sitting in the back of a B-29 for 11 hours (AFTER a 4-hour cross-country hop) and the inside air temp running close to 120F... Answering the same questions from Superfort fans over & over & over...

I finally quit doing that for ever'body, and just concentrated on being nice to the girls with great big ol'.......

Their was ONE chick that, man.... Let's just say I was prayin' she'd wanna take the tunnel from the waist to the flight-deck insteada going out from the bombbay... She was like a cross 'tween Peg Bundy and Elvira... And she was at at least 4 different shows we flew to... Ain't kidding, a real, live B-29 groupie... Man, that jus' don't happen...

Anyway, Membership in the ORA is open to all, kinda goes along with the Artistic License Certification...

Need some ideas for a medal/certificate for modeling wounds too... Since I was able to stab m'self in the azz with my X-Acto, I figure there's gotta be some kind of recognition for that too...
