Learn How You Can Make A Change In The Hobby!
Posted by VideoWorkbench on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 5:28 PM

Jason Gares and Video Workbench would like to let you know that you can actually make a change in the model kit hobby and community. Back in December I entered the Video Workbench series of videos into the Walmart sponsored contest "Get on the Shelf". The end goal will be to get Video Workbench model kit instructional DVDs on Walmart store shelves for sale to the mainstream buying public. This is where I need your help to make a change in the one thing that I hear a lot of you complain about, the decline of model kits in mainstream stores. If you vote for the Video Workbench brand, you will be giving a chance to a hobby that has been put on the back burner and to a small home based business. Starting March 7th, I will need all of your help, so please vote for me and Video Workbench. More information can be found at the links below. I will remind you when the voting starts on March 7th. Thank you for your time.

I've advertised in Finescale Modeler for my DVD series and have been in the hobby for quite a while.

You can find out more about me and my DVD series at the link below:

As for being a "Drive-by" poster, I've been more on Facebook more then anything.

Plus, I don't stick to just one "click" or forum.

Hans von Hammer

Who are you?

I don't feel comfortable with clicking on links from "Drive-by" posters..

I'm pretty sure that Han's wasn't quite looking for link to a website, to verify your link to a website.  Just sayin'.

Not that I'm a mainstay here but I think others would be more comfortable backing a product by someone with more then 2 posts.

I appreciate your ambition but you also need to provide a bit more info about how your video is going to change the hobby.  When big names like Revell couldn't keep their spots on the shelves, you may need to enlighten us with a bit more of your business plan.  "change the hobby" is a bold statement which you need to be able to back up.

A+ for initiative, but you need more then just getting on the Walmart video shelves to make a difference.  Just ask Kevin Costner how Waterworld worked out for him.

Yep, and this is why I don't go to forums...

I thought of actually thinking outside of the box and going to a well known forum for a magazine that I spent a good penny advertising in.

I thought I would try, but so far, I get negative comments instead of positive ones, that's pretty much what I expected....

I really don't have the time to waste to make a bunch of posts on forums. I have a family, a full-time job and a small business that take up all of my time.

All that I was trying to do here was reach out and extend a hand to a hobby that pretty much gets ignored now.

I don't need to make a bunch of posts to verify who I am, my product does that on it's own.

I also sell my DVDs through Megahobby, Amazon.com and eBay. Plus, there's a YouTube channel under the Video Workbench name. If you want to find out more, just Google Video Workbench.

Changing the hobby is how anyone can help, no matter how large or small a contribution, IMO.

As for enlightening everyone about my business plan, I will not do that on a public forum. That's only for my financial backer to know.

Like I stated before, just Google Video Workbench and you can learn more.

I don't think you've been met by negativity, just questioning.

The negativity seems to be coming from your foul approach to this forum and its members.

While you don't need to publish your financial business plan for all to see, you can inform abit more about you, your involvement in this hobby and what your trying to market.

The most information you've provided so far is that I have to google your business or go to your website.

Many of the members on here have families, full time jobs, part time jobs and some are currently serving overseas.  So for the same reason why you don't waste your time making posts on forums, the members here manage their time as they see fit so you could be more forthcoming with information to substantiate yourself beyond someone that created an account to sell a product.

You may have a legit business, and sell a legit product but for the same reason why you don't want to share information you should appreciate why others are hesitant to jump on the band wagon.  In the black and white internet it looks like you created an account to further advertise your product.  Which is why the onus if on you to differentiate yourself from that perception.

Just some advice from someone that has worked sales.

I get the feeling that he isn't so much wanting to change our hobby than to make a buck for himself...as far as the comment that "we" are a neglected bunch of folks needing him to save our hobby, I don't get that feeling.  We, as modelers, have never had so much to choose from...in fact, we have so much most of us have stashes that will NEVER get built...the fact that Wally World doesn't carry the new Great Wall P-61 doesn't really concern me...and guess what---they NEVER WILL...

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not twisting anyone's arm, just passing on some information.

Take it for what it's worth.

Have a GREAT day! :)

As a matter of fact, my goal is two fold:

1.) Trying to get the hobby back into the "mainstream" like it once was. Being more prominent then it is now.

AND

2.) Making a "buck for myself". That's why someone has a business. To make money...

Why do you think FSM still charges $39.95 for 10 issues a year no matter if it's a paper or digital copy..... to make money. it's all part of capitalism... and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Yep, this is pretty much going the way that I expected it. Oh well, it just reaffirms what I believe. :)

How does voting on an instructional DVD help get model kits back on mainstream store shelves? While it may get your own personal poduct on the shelf at a paticular store, how will it attract new blood into the hobby and create more buyers toexpand the demand for kits?

Now those are some very good questions that I will try to answer, and thank you for asking. :)

1.) Question: How does voting on an instructional DVD help get model kits back on mainstream store shelves?

Answer: By creating awareness of the products (model kits), and if, by hopefully selling the DVDs of the subject matter at hand, perhaps being able to push the product back onto store shelves.

2.) Question: While it may get your own personal product on the shelf at a particular store, how will it attract new blood into the hobby and create more buyers to expand the demand for kits?

Answer: By it being marketed to both young and older people alike. Hopefully bringing them together and pushing that you can create things by using your hands besides using a controller to play video games.

Again, thanks for the questions. it was GREATLY appreciated. :)

I watched your videos on Facebook last year or longer ago and really enjoyed them. I have not seen you post there for a while. If I remember correctly you are into the Sci-Fi and figure area of modeling.

I will go to your link and help you out. Good Luck.

Wow, I just read all the other comments and they are being pretty rough on you.

I do remember you posting about a year ago you were getting into the video business. After checking out your website, it look like you have been very busy making some really good instructional videos.

I sent you a friend request. I guess you changed your profile, because I can't find you on my friend list now.

I am looking forward voting for your product in March.

Thank you Tim for your kind words and support. It really means a lot! :)

Most of the previous comments are really the reason that I don't post on forums anymore. Plus being really busy....

I just wanted to reach out to the community to ask for some help. Thinking that the model kit community could rally together and get noticed. To help push a product, that last year actually made a profit. Not a HUGE one, but a profit non-the-less. And with saying that, it shows that there is an interest.

Plus, voting is FREE, it doesn't cost a thing.

I thought that people would be on board to help out the hobby that they say that they love so much. I have the business and make the videos because I love the hobby and of course to make money, that's why I have the business. People who own a business don't do it to make a loss and not to provide a service of some sort.

My DVDs are carried on Megahobby.com, Amazon.com and on eBay, besides my own website.

So, I'm trying.... all I'm asking for is a chance and a fair shake.

I remember directing someone to your site last year in the Feedback/Suggestion forum looking for beginner DVDs. I actually have one of your VHS tapes from a while back trying to give my now grown sons some pointers. It's the sci-fi modeling one. My boys were building the new Star Wars episode 1 kits at the time.

You can count on my vote and I admire your initiative to create a supplementary income out of the hobby. I'm doing the same with my Blog which is a basically a hobby within the hobby.

Good luck!  I will be back on March 7.

WOW!

Really?

I can't believe this...

Please read the post a little closer...

I'm NOT selling anything! I'm asking for a vote from fellow model builders. From a magazine that not only I subscribe to, but also advertised in.

I'm NOT asking for money, now or in the future... It's for a FREE vote for a series of videos that help people build plastic model kits better and faster.

It's to try to push a hobby back into the mainstream.

Wow, I'm really flabbergasted over this...
