Forgot to mention on that Canon: SD card = yes; battery pack = no. That is actually a plus with me, I prefer running rechargeable AA batteries to trying to remember to keep a charge in one of those stupid battery packs, or buying a 2nd one for $40??.
Had a little Kodak 7MP point & shoot before this one, actually a nice little camera with an over-achieving zoom lens (super-sharp despite only having a 5x zoom) but not much in the way of macro ability. Before that - a hideous little Samsung, that was good for snapshots & little else.

VanceCrozier I'm sure they've dropped in price lately, or you could score one on Ebay for less.

That's pretty much the plan.
I don't need a NEW camera. Heck, I've been all digital since 2004, had great results with some cameras past, and don't need the latest and greatest. But I do need an SD card. Figure I can pick up an 8-10MP something that was good three years ago and be fine. Heck, I've got an ancient Olympus C-4040Z that I'd use if it took SD cards.
Thing is, I got burned pretty bad on point-and-shoots a few years back with a Sony (they were a client). Absolute piece of trash camera. Ridiculous "noise reduction" that basically, when encountering noise due to its own retarded metering, just pixellated everything.
So I'm trying to get a sense of what everyone uses to figure out what cameras don't suck.

Canon Powershot SX130 IS
12x optical zoom, 12.1MP, very good all-around camera in that middle zone between the $80 pocket cameras and "I'd better clear this one with the wife...". Heavy enough to feel like a camera - I hate those little guys the size of a pack of cigarettes, not enough weight = too unsteady for hand-held shots imho. Good colour balance, I rarely have to do much correction work. I do wish the macro was a little better, but for the price ($229 CDN at the time, I kid you not) you get a nice camera. I'm sure they've dropped in price lately, or you could score one on Ebay for less.
I use a Fuji FinePix S5200 that I have had since 2005 when we bought it to photograph our son's graduation from MCRD San Diego.
It was highly rated, takes excellent pictures including macro and is smallish.
It is about 1/2 the size of a full size SLR and even though it's only 5.1 MP It serves all my needs.
Here's a review of the camera: http://www.dpreview.com/products/fujifilm/compacts/fuji_finepixs5200z
Here is a sample of it's macro capabilities. Not bad for a camera you can get on Ebay still for about $160 roughly.

Here's an outdoor shot.
I use a three year old Canon PowerShot SD 790 Digital ELPH.It does all I need, but in macro, shots with a white background tend to appear yellow for some reaon.
The macro feature woks great.
This one's coming both of curiosity and genuine interest.
I shoot all of my "staged" shots with a Nikon D300s. Love it, but it's too unwieldy for off-the-cuff bench WIP shots. So I use my iPhone all the time. Thing is, I hate the lack of any exposure or white balance control. I hate the way it meters. So I'm eyeballing picking up a point-and-shoot off eBay. Something a few years old...so long as it's got an SD card and does well at the bench.
So what do you shoot with? How do you like it? How's the macro, the color, etc?
