I'm a member of the local Rocky Mountain club.  Met a lot of great guys of my age (Senior citizens) and we usually go out for a beer and a snack at a local Irish pub after each meeting.  I have also learned a lot of modeling tricks from these guys.  Nice to have a "guy's night out" once a month!

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

i'm a national member and belong to a denver club and a colorado springs club as well as a wooden ship model club. i enjoy the meetings and my wood ship club also has a monthly workshop where we just get together and build and bs a bit. we have been doing this for a year and it's more informative than the meetings. my denver club is starting one too.

I joined my local IPMS (NJ) about 4 years ago,and it was the best move in modeling I have made.My builds have gotten better and better. They have a monthly contest with theme nights so I have also branched out to ships and soon sci-fi.....  I also belong to the National and I agree the Journal alone is worth the price. I might be moving to north west Georgia I hope to find a local club down there that is active.

I am not a national member, at least not since 1982, but I am a member of the local chapter. An excellent decision that I made to join up, if I do say so myself. While I have learned a lot on here, going to meetings, meeting other builders and learning from them has really helped kick up my builds a couple notches over the past almost 5 years since I joined. I can't vouch for every chapter, and I have heard horror stories about the old days (International P*** & Moan Society was pretty accurate), but for me it has been a very positive experience. I have met some superb builders, learned from them, made a few freinds and partaken in the after meeting social outings, and even got hooked up with the local AMPS chapter.

I'm a member, have been one for many years. I spent 24 out of the last 25 years on active duty (retired last July) and being a member has helped me join in with the local modelers whenever I get restationed.

One of the benefits to being a member is that you get a pretty nice bi-monthly magazine called the Journal. If you consider your membership dues to equate to the price of a subscription to the Journal, it works out to about $4 an issue (6 issues for $25/yr). The IPMS has its own website and forum much like this one but not nearly as active.

A good number of members of local IPMS clubs I've been a part of are also national IPMS members, but it isn't required. You can be a member of a local club without being a national member and vice versa.

I live in NE Atlanta, GA, and have noodled over joining for several years.  The chapter here does not seem to be all that active, but I may be wrong.  I am not necessarily interested in contests, but it would be nice to network face-to-face and make some non-virtual friends who could share a build session (and a beer?) every now and then.

Curious about opinions out there good, bad or indifferent...
