Yes, well done indeed. That's a great looking build and a really nice piece.

I was looking at that over the weekend. I haven't built a ship in years but do have a few to do, and I was really interested to see your use of clear rods to support the ship.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Thanks, guys.  A friend of mine, Frank Cuden, and I seem to be in a competition to see who can get the most articles in FSM. Frank's considerably ahead at this point.

A beautiful ship, beautifully done.  And the article had plenty of insights and techniques for us novices.  Thanks, Don.

Hi , DON :

Well , you did it up good this time . Since when can you justify the time to write , what with all those models waiting to be built ? LOL.LOL.LOL. I think you did a great service to the shipbuilding modelers out there and gave rise to some courage on the part of the Fencesitters out there too . I for one , though have never published or been published anywhere , but , in the " HERALD-ZEITUNG newspaper here in New Braunfels  , Texas . I laud your clear and relatively concise manner of getting the point across and the photos were great . I am also glad there's someone who shares my penchant for clear rod (I use the twisted type) to mount the ship and bouy on .That was an interesting way to depict the ship though . I don't believe I've ever seen anyone deploy the torpedo nets .Great job .Congrats on a fine article . Tanker-Builder

Hi , DON :

Simple justification.  A small pension and SS doesn't go far in paying for more expensive kits.  When I want something really expensive, I figure I must sell an article to pay for it.  Not sure my income from articles completely pays for my modeling- heck, I know it doesn't- but it certainly helps offset the cost. I ordered a lot of stuff as soon as I got the check, including my next major ship project, the Trumpeter San Francisco with the GMM PE set.

That will go on the bench after a finish my current ship project, a scratch built Great Lakes schooner.

Don :

Since you mention the Great Lakes ship and others ,you piqued my interest .I have photos (all of it ! of the historic " Scow Schooner -ALMA ) This sailing heritage ship is Not a replica But the real thing .Now there's a significant model of West coast - Northern California Sacramento river haulers if there ever was one !  I have her keel laid , then the KIA decided it was time I gave her a major monetary bit of attention . You know how that is  .I too work the ships and supplies in every other check . It seems to work fairly well .. Hey - Model On ! and excellent work .      Tanker - Builder

Don,

Great article and a great model. I haven't built a ship model since I was a kid. Reading that article piqued my interest. The odds have improved on a ship model showing up in my stash.

I have posted one in-progress pic already.  I will do another when I have hull carving complete- not too far from that point now.

I too was impressed by your Dreadnought, Don!  I also like your diversity---planes and stuff.  What all do you build?  AFV's , cars & trucks etc?  Inspire us man!!

I used to say I would model anything that moved.  Then I found in a book lover's catalog a kit for a Gutenberg printing press model.  Built it!

I watched the Alma sail up and down the water front several times this week. They've been bringing her out for watching the races with NPS folks on board. A friend of mine went out and she said the AC72's cut them really close during practice. Full set of sails, very nice.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

No, I don't.  Can't believe there are two kits of that though :-)  Mine was mostly wood, with just a few brass parts.
