My mindset has always been, "Id probably not build another (insert current project) so Id better build it in the best possible way I can."

About 12 F-16s, 5 F-14s, 4 F-15s, 7 F-18s, 6 M-1 Abrams, 3 Nimitzes, 4 Ticonderogas, 2 Burkes, etc. later, and I somehow still think that way.

I havent joined a contest in years so theres really no need to soup anything up.  But I still do.  The other day I was mulling the F-22 I had on the bench. I could close up the weapons bay and make life easier for me, or ...

I ended up opening the bays. Why?  And I remember telling myself this: because its harder.

I guess its all about your personal satisfaction.  And I guess in modeling, that IS the primary consideration.  Everything else is secondary.

Yup, same here as Stik.

I have only done one all-out detailing project, and to be honest I didn't enjoy it.  It was for a contest and I didn't finish on time.  But it did get me hooked on PE seat belts.

Oho, a 1/700 man!  Better beware; detailing ships is like crack addiction.  You keep wanting more and more until you go insane.  If you want a look at what happens when 1/700 modelers go beyond help, see any recent issue of Model Graphix magazine.  (At least it's all in Japanese, so you can't find out exactly what they did!)

Either or... Some projects I will detail to the utmost of my abilities and push those to the next level. Others are done OOB or just slightly upgraded. After all some kits could use more TLC than others. And sometimes a major upgrade project is so draining that you need an OOB project to refresh your motivation.

Bingo stik, you hit it right on the mark. Just depends on the kit and the mood.

Somewhere in between,I like to add some enhancements, but certainly not what you would call super detailing.

Both, depending on whether or not the kit is a real challenge.

I tend to not be satisfied until I have the radio working and the landing lights on.

Oops

I must admit that detailing is an interesting form of punishment.  Big Smile

While I'm happy to see a nicely detailed aircraft, a model's outward appearance is more important to me than some part inside the cockpit that will never be seen by human eyes again.  Sometimes you just have to say, "Is this really worth it?"  Wouldn't that time be more valuably spent working on another model?

I will never be accused of being a great modeler.  I'm too middle of the road in my detailing for that.

OOB or detailed?

I was just curious how many people are strictly OOB or do you detail the heck out of the model? I was a strictly a OOB 700 scale modeler until a few months ago. I decided to take my time and put some details into it. Some aftermarket AA guns and half of the PE fret later and it was the best model I've ever made. Instead of build  model just to finish it and put it on the shelf. I took my time and im looking forward to the next IPMS contest to see what it will do. Maybe nothing but I'm proud of my build and that's what matters. So if you haven't tried to detail a model, just try it and you may be surprised what you come up with.
