If you've seen my thread on the other armor forum, Gino Quintilliani posted a picture of the VIC-3 set he got. It came out better than even I expected. The printers can reproduce quite a bit of it actually. Those screws on the VIC-5 can't be reproduced as shown because the distance between the faces and the screwed is too close. But it's such a small feature that it shouldn't be noticed too much. To print the material used for this model, Shapeways uses Multi-jet Modeling.

Hello Mike!

That's good news - I'm looking forward to seeing the VIC-1 kit in the shop! The CAD drawings indeed look very cool - I wonder how much of that the 3D printer can reproduce. What print technology do they use?

Good luck with your projects and have a nice day

Ok guys, this is the time you've all been waiting for...

Yep. A VIC-1. I will also be doing it in conjunction with a VRC-12 set.

Hello!

Thanks a lot for your message - I hope you can get a hang on those measurements. I'm currently trying to scratchbuilt the crew boxes and I came across the TM 11-5820-401-20-2/EE150-JA-MMO-020/E154 VRC 12, 43 - and on the page 1-12 it states the width, height, depth and even the weight of the components - so maybe that could help you any.

And when I wrote switches, I meant the three-pronged light switch you see in every military vehicle after 1950. In bigger machines you have a very similar looking switch for the ignition system or something like that - so maybe it could be a good idea to do something like that in 3D.

Good luck with your projects and have a nice day

I've officially finished the VIC-5 set. I have yet to upload it because I need to make a small instruction pamphlet and some renders. The pictures below are not completely up to date but show the basic setup and form of the parts. I will be ordering a set to see how they print as well.

Below is a AN/VIC-3 LV2 set I finished recently. This is meant for light vehicles and Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) whereas the ROVIS AN/VIC-3 is meant for heavy vehicles like tanks and APCs.

Hello!

I've seen your products on Shapeways, they are lookin' good!

What I'd like to see would be more stuff to fit out interiors of Vietnam-era military vehicles - standard stuff like radios, periscopes, switches, instrument clusters and stuff like that. A good staring point would be the VIC-1 set. If you like, I could even supply you with a TM. A US militatry dome light or portable fire extinguisher would be good, too!

Good luck with your 3D-modelling and have a nice day

Paweł

I am planning on a VIC-1 set. Unfortunately I just haven't been able to get very detailed measurements of it. While the smaller crew stations aliment pose a problem, it's the main box that has me caught up. Later today I'll try to do some quick modeling and get it down but I can't promise anything right now. I also have a VRC-12 radio set planned but, again, I'm lacking detailed measurements.

And I'm pretty good on TMs. I have a few TMs on the VIC-1 and VRC-12, among other systems. I'm not sure what you mean by switches... I'm thinking of small switches which would be too small to handle in 1/35.

I guess it's time for an update, no?

A few days ago I began work on editing my VIC-3(V) design to transform it into a VIC-5 TacG2. That process is nearly completed with a few more edits and the moving around of MANY knobs. Renders will be incoming soon (as soon as I get finished... I hope). I will also get a start on making a LV2 set out of the ROVIS VIC-3 set.

I'm sorry but I can't do aircraft.

On another note, I finally completely finished the AN/VIC-3 model and a model or Mk 13 torpedoes. I also got in a kit of Bronco's M2 Bailey Bridge. I'll be starting on a set of missing pieces from that soon. Here's my plan of attack on the M1/M2 Bailey Bridges:

1. Pieces missing from Bronco kit

2. Pieces Bronco got wrong

3. Rest of the set.

Well I managed to get the Mk 29 GMLS set fixed again. Had to take out that rear platform on the launcher base. I am also almost finished with a Mk 13 torpedoe set. Just need to thicken some support structures. If anyone has some questions on the stuff I'm doing, you can email me here: mikesmsproductions(at)gmail.com

Real G

At the moment, printing technology is most suitable to produce parts that would be impossible to mold in plastic, too delicate for resin (or someone hasn't thought of doing it yet), and too 3-D for photo-etch.

I can think of a couple:

- US periscope guards for tanks

- Those pie pan shaped thingies that go on the Millenium Falcon's landing gear legs.  Vector design will allow the base pattern to be scaled to fit the various kits out there.

- The thrust deflector vanes in Fine Molds' Y-Wing Fighter.  (The Bandai kit has them properly represented, I think.)

- Afterburner cans and flame holders for kits that don't have aftermarket yet, like the Monogram F-102.  Design the breakdown such that the useable portions from the kit can just slot in without sawing and modding.

- And if articulating printed parts are doable, motorcycle chains!

Pretty much most of that description you have there is true. Depending on the material used for the print, 3D printed parts can also be quite fragile. But they can achieve a level of detail much smaller than what can be found most resin sets or kits. There are a lot of periscope guards out there now, many for the Sherman. I've recently done a set of headlight brush guards for a M3 Stuart. For kit-specific parts, I would need the actual kit. Which I don't have :P. But it's on my mind. And articulating parts are doable but only in large enough scales. As the parts get smaller, the scale needed for the parts to be able to articulate needs to get larger. Chains would be too fragile (and small) to print articulating in 1/24 and smaller. I don't know about 1/16 as I've never worked in that scale before and I'm not sure about the size of chains in it but I think it would still be a bit too small.

Aleksander

I was thinking about correct "spats" undercarriage for Curtiss Thai Hawk 75M (as well as for China Demonstrator), for Academy model in 1/48. The Academy undercarriage is too small and has a wrong shape - and I'm sure it would be easy to make a corrected one. From the other hand - I don't know how many modelers would need it, though.

But - this is my "5 cents"

Cheers!

I don't think it would be too easy to do the spats. They are a pretty complex shape and I have no resources for measurements.

I haven't gotten around to updating the Mk 29 launchers.  It will take a lot of work. Nor have I gotten to adding the RAFT or speakers to the radios set. I have started a newer, hopefully simpler and easier project: I started designing some diorama bases for 1/144 armor. The first will be representative of Western German/ French cities and towns and who include a small section of a city block and street with portions of two buildings. The base is about 5 inches in length by 4 in depth. I just need to figure out the height to make the buildings as they will be 3 stories each. If you have a request for a different scene, I'd be glad to entertain it, as usual. Either mention it in the thread here, send me a message or shoot me an email. Did I put down my email here?

Edited: The New shop won't be used.

I have to update the Mk 29 GMLS set again. It will be some time before that can happen though. I will be taking down the post in the mean time. I also had to update the Mk 6 depth charges set. I finally finished the update and you will be getting more on the same size wafer including rows of charges preformed for launchers and holding racks. Along with 66 single charges. In total, about 258 charges.

Yeah I think it's pretty neat. I haven't been able to do much work on it though. Still need to finish off the paper plan off it. If anyone wants to help out, I need someone to review the plans and then the model I've drawn up. But someone who knows cold war US Tanks very well.

Weeelllllll............

I've been complaining with a bunch of new 1/35th European civilians coming out there still isn't any 1/35th Asian civvies except from Vietnam. Gosh, I'd kill for some decent Korean civilians for a Korean War diorama I'm building. Chinese or Japanese civilians would be great too. So far about the only thing I've seen is a 1/32nd geisha- whi would scale out to about 6 foot or 2 metres tall in 1/35th!!!

I'd figure doing a person is much harder than doing mechanical stuff although I've been told there's stuff like Poser that help. And then you've got all the folds, bows, and complex stuff with a hanbok or kimono...

Lota work but you did ask! Gee whiz, I really need to work on my skills and do it myself...
