For instance, I always liked the looks of the F-105 - but being a warbird man, I only felt the urge to build it after reading about the Wild Weasel missions in Vietnam. That was flat out crazy - I had to have one on the display cabinet. On a funny (I think) sidenote: a friend of mine who likes airplanes but doesn't know much about them asked, after looking at the completed model: "that's Maverick's dad airplane, isn't it?"
According to Viper, Maverick's dad flew an F-4 Phantom off the U.S.S. Oriskany during the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, the Oriskany is too small for Phantoms, so he actually would have been flying an F-8 Crusader. (Yes, Top Gun is one of my all time favorite movies. I never watch it for accuracy, but LOOOOVE the F-14) I don't think a F-105 could get off a carrier deck even with a catapult.
Wild Weasels are an interesting group Have you ever heard their original motto (as i recall)? Its YGBSM. You Gotta Be S__tting Me. Makes me laugh every time.
