If by "mythical unicorn" you mean "something that does not currently ecist, and may never" I'd guess maybe something like a "fully accurate" - insert name here, would be my thought, in that I suspect that no matter what any company puts out, there will likely be those who don't agree with certain details. 

For big stuff and/or one off items, like a specific ship (or something similar) I'd suspect that its actual appearance on any given day may have varied, so that just because someone may have a picture showing it configured one way on one specific day does not mean it might not have looked slightly different on another day.

As for other items where there were lots of a given item produced (like planes, cars, tanks, etc) I suspect that there may be small variations in each item produced that may result in variations in detail, eventhough all the items were notionally the same "variant" or "model number", etc.

As such, my guess is that no matter how hard a model company may try and research an item, there will always be debate on any given kits accuracy.

PS. As an example, my last car apparently was a very early build Fiat 500 Pop, and I later found out that within just a few weeks or so after mine was built, the compnay decided to make some changes in the standard options, resulting in other notionally similar models on the lot having some differences in details (like the steering wheel, etc).  As such, I always had the feeling that if I ever tried to build a model of that car, someone would look at it and tell me that I had gotten some detail wrong, since it didn't match pictures on the Fiat website

Nope Gary, not a snipe hunt, because they already made several scales of the Sopwith Snipe. They also made a 1/72 super snipe lorry., etc. 

The question, is it an "authentic" snipe; or even a mythical unicorn snipe?

I would kill for a USS Bouge kit in 1/72........

But it will never happen.

And, if it does "Miraculosly" appear, it would cost me a month's wage's for sure !

I'm currently back finishing my BIG Bogue CVE; the Tamiya 1/700. Got the full hull conversion done this week. Carry it around in my pocket when I'm doing other stuff.

But in the course of reaquainting myself with the subject, I did come across a 1/72 card model kit. It's only six feet long! I'll send you the link if you wish. A good modeler like yourself could do it.

I'm thrilled that you have so much faith in me. But, at 6 feet long, there is an awful lot of surface to leave my Thumbprint on.

If “unicorn” means that kit you will never be able to get, for me it’s a Master Grade MS-06D Zaku Desert Type.  I have wanted a 1/100 kit of that Zaku variant since the original 1/144 MSV kit came out in the 1980s.

The aircraft and armor kit makers are doing a great job in giving me cool and weird subjects, so I am pretty happy with them.

Another "Unicorn kit" I would like, a 1/25 scale Unlimited Hydroplane. I know Testor's did one a few year's ago, but that kit had some "issue's".

My unicorn kit would be any subject I want that has "perfect" detail (down to the rivet). The detailed kit would need to be in less than 200 pieces. It would have to fit perfect, meaning that every panel line, door seam, wing root, canopy, etc. alligned perfect. It would have the perfect panel detail and not have any flash, seam line, or ejection pin marks. It would come with ALL items needed, meaning no need for after market supplies ( masks, hoses, fittings, P.E, resin parts, etc.). The P.E. would be stainless and pre-shaped to fit perfectly. The decals would settle in every form, curve, crease perfectly. They would also cover ANY color without ANY bleed through or shading of any decal. And most important, it would have to cost less than $50.00......

Yes, that would be my purple unicorn......

P.S.: this is no any kind of dig or cut at our current model industry. Our quality of manufacturer today far exceeds those of even 15 years ago. And the after market industry provides items that were never even thought of or capable for us modelers just years back. Kudo's to all the manufacturers and suppliers who make quality products that allow us to do the things we do.....

  I have to admit, one big dream of mine would be for model manufacturers to find a way to print decals preshaped to fit complex parts, because I always have doubts about putting flat decals onto complexly curved surfaces

That sounds... actually possible.  With the supersizing trend in kits going strong, who knows?  We now have four-engined WW II bombers in 1/32, which would have been unthinkable 10-20 years ago, and I’d bet someone is already working on a 1/32 B-29.  Then there is the resin 1:48 B-36 and XB-70, so yeah, your ”unicorn” might just come to your door!

But a wingspan of 185 feet in 1/48 works out to 55 inches!  Better have a really big display case!  I’d guess such a monster in styrene would be closer to $350 or so...  So you can buy THREE!

There you go.....can do a "D", "G", and "H".   While I would like to see a 1/48 "G", the 1/72 is big enough....

Would like a 1/24 or 1/16 RF4C and F4E though.

Have the "G" and all of the Phantoms (1/32).  Putting together all the models I worked on back in the day....long time ago and far, far away.

It was real but havn't seen one in person.  AMT 1967 Mustang Coupe (not fastback).

What about a nice 1/48 scale tamiya b-1 lancer bomber.  I know revell made one but imagine the quality and  craftsmanship of a tamiya one.

Mine would have to be a 1989 Dodge Dakota regular cab 4x4.  With a sunroof. First vehicle I ever had in my own name.  A lot of fun to drive!  it would also need to have the proper wheels I had.

I'm not going to hold my breath, though.

The M4 DD family in 1/35. M4, M4A1, and M4A2. Not resin kits, but  styrene injection mainstream companies.

 That is not actually a " Unicorn " but none around .AMT did the " Miss Budweiser " years before Testors re-hashed it . I never understood why they just didn't change the Decals and keep it out . Except wood it was the only readily available one out there .

 If you find one now expect to part with a couple of " C " notes to acquire . Unlimiteds were and are a fascinating type of watercraft .
