I actuaally saw a stash about like that once. The guy was on  Swanny's and had a bunch of kits for sale. I went over to his apt. and there were kits stacked chest high all up and down the hall, in rooms. 

Introduced me to his wife; she wouldn't look me in the eyes.

Solid retirement stash there!

Funny, I don't see any Tamiya or DMLor Italeri kits in there.  Of course, I can't see it all clearly.  Otherwise,  it looks like my collection off the shelves.  My wife had a good laugh.

And here I thought that selling around 130 kits from my stash last year was a case of me having too much stuff, .....this here is an addiction or mental health issue. Then again, it could be he got them from a trust/will, or business closure (?).

And now the question, will he sell them for what they are worth, in one bulk price, or for pennies on the dollar?

Another question that begs to be answered, are all of those models inventoried and in a database or spreadsheet?

Seeing this makes me feel sane now , sad that I am using this to justify my stash as a rational thing.

I met a guy at HL and he used to own a hobby store. He said he currently had a two car garage floor to ceiling, wall to wall full of kits. He guessed he had over 4K kits. The funny part was he was at HL buying MORE.  This dude was easily in his 80's.

My best friend, sadly, has been diagnosed with an untreatable form of prostate cancer, and has been trying, unsuccessfully, to get rid of his stash of only 30 or 40 kits. I tried helping, and contacted a dealer in Seattle who had sold me a model of the hospital ship USS Haven. The wife of the owner told me that they are both beyond retirement age, and would like to dump their stock, but they too are having a lot of trouble finding anyone who wants to buy it.

Stamp collectors are having similar problems — most of us collectors are older folks now, and young people just aren't taking up collecting like their parents and grandparents. One result is a huge surplus or ordinary stamps and covers, and relatively low prices for better stamps and covers, although I did "manage" to spend more than $300 recently on a rare cover. (Not so long ago, I would have thought that spending $300 on an old envelope was the height of idiocy. But this morning I spent $85 on groceries that will last about a week!)

It is interesting to note that the LHS over here have been seeing an uptick in kit purchases.

The photo of the “Model King” on his mountain of kits spooks me out, as I was just thinking of pulling out my entire stash to sort and thin.  The LHS do consignment sales, so it might be a good time to do so.

Now if only the LHS are allowed to open...

I have been having the same thoughts lately about my stash of 200+ kits with the way the world is going, and my own long term incurable health conditions. 

It's my hope to at least get my money back for them, or maybe even make a small profit to pay down debt, but my fear is these kits won't even sell now, other than for a song.

When I lived in Okinawa, I used the spare room in our base housing home to store the its I bought.  I filled the closet and had stacks all over the room.  It took three packing crates to load everything when we returned to the states.  Back then the yen rate was 265 to the dollar and I went out every payday after a trip to the bank on Kadena to grab enough yen for the trip to the local toy stores.  I ended up selling most of them to a local store and a couple club members when we arrived here.  My job at the time wasn't paying much, the government was trying ot grab money by saying we were over our weight allowence by 1,500 pounds for the move and trying to charge us by the pound despite us having less than the first time but the difference was the same as before.  Somebody was making money on this, We were not the only ones who came back with this exact problem, and the shipping section on the local base here woiuld not even listen to the complaint when they called us to show up at their office.

Quite a while back, we had a post like this and IIR correctly didn't one of the guys say he had an 18 wheeler trailer full of kits along the side of his house? I forget how many he said were in the trailer before he lost count. Must be nice to have such a choice right at hand.

Absolutely!  Both the chap in the picture and the one with the trailer are definitely spoilt for choice!  Whatever subject they feel like at the time, whatever level of complexity they want, there's something there - if they can a) remember that they have it, and b) remember where it is.  There's probably not a GB in the world they couldn't enter!

I think of my (fairly modest - 30 or so) stash as my personal model shop.  When I'm ready to start a new build, I'm not restricted to what's in the LHS at the time, or whether or not I can afford it.  The vast majority of kits in a shop hold no interest for me, or are too expensive, but all of those in the stash are kits I want to build, and they're already paid for.  Two good reasons to have a stash - of whatever size suits your needs

A quote I saw in an Australian modeling magazine - it went along the following lines - "I've gradually come to understand that modeling is actually two seperate hobbies, building and collecting."

The poem that was placed in the last issue of FSM was great. It really nailed it.

OK, a PSA announcement time guys - We are all mortal with a finite lifespan.  Do NOT leave your mess for your loved ones to deal with after your demise!

I have had more than one model buddy pass on, and some of them left behind rooms, garages, and storage units FULL of model kits.  The bargain hunters' eyes gloss over in excitement, but if you had to personally deal with ridding the bereaved of these mega-stashes, it is no fun at all.  My sister told me that she would kill me if I did this to her.  By the tone in her voice, I believe her.  My sister has long arms (like Baron Ottomatic from "Tom Slick"), so she'd be able to get me, somehow. 

In my fantasy world, I finish the last model on the shelf and then die in my sleep that night.  In the real world, it's not going to happen that way.  The best I can do is cull the collection and be careful of what I buy.  Ha-ha, that's like saying I'm a dog and promise not to eat all the pieces of cheese sitting on the table when no one is looking.

But yeah, I have a seriously huge stash.  It is time.

I have a several more Tamiya tanks in my room still.  In my defense, a couple of armor kits are moving down the assembly line.

I have a thing for MaK, so I'm keeping all of it.  But I did find one duplicate kit just with different markings, so I could possibly part with one.

The sharp-eyed will note there are no airplanes in any of the photos.  There were just too many, and the living room was in shambles by the time I got to them. 

Even if I fnished a model a month, by my estimate I will only "need" 240 models before I pass on.

I have become "that guy".  

So come on guys, help me by posting photos of your even greater stashes, so I won't feel so bad!

Same here.  I may get rid of all of my airplane and ship kits, but I'm keeping my MaK stash.  It's a little bigger than that, but not by much.  The thing about MaK kits is that the finished models don't take up as much room as my airplanes and ships would.

On the other hand, leaving the loved ones the stash to deal with is sweet revenge for all the dirty looks and heavy sighs we have gotten from those that just don't understand or just tolerate us.

I have about 140 kits, I've built about 10 so far this this year but I've bought about 6.

I guess I'm moving in the right direction.
