Well, I build 2 or 3 a week, on average. As the glue or paint or whatever is setting on one, I do another. It takes sometimes about 2-3 weeks to get one finished, but I just mostly do OOB stuff without all the extra detailing. So normally, I have anywhere from 3-10 kits in various stages of completion at any one time.

Of course, even at that pace, if I work steadily at it, I could probably finish what I have stashed now in 4 or 5 years, probably more.

Hi all,

It's questions like this that bring into focus one's problems in life. I haven't done any modeling since the middle of June because (1) I'm spending too much time on the computer, (2) my work area is too cluttered for me to work on a model, and (3) the summer has been pretty busy.

Having realized that, I plan on cleaning up the work area tonight, so I can start a new kit tonight. My most recent two builds have each taken more than a year to complete. Partially, I think, because I didn't spend a lot of time per week on them, and partially because I was learning new techniques and trying new things as I went along.

At that rate, it'll be 20 years or so before I finish my stash. Sad [:(]

I've been working on a wooden ship model, but that is very slow going because it's a different world in a lot of ways from building styrene airplane kits!

I've also noticed a disturbing trend in myself to want to make every build a build of a lifetime. So I've scaled down my expectations for the kit I'll be starting tonight. I'm going to build it almost out of the box with a scratch-built instrument panel being the only non-standard part of the kit.

My plan is to focus on doing a great job on assembly and painting. I want to finish it by the PennCon model show at the end of September.

If I can build two to three kits a year, it'll only take me six to ten years to finish my models.

We'll see how that goes.

Regards,

-Drew

Well it would take me maybe a week.  LOL I sold a LOT of my models on ebay to get some cash up to buy modeling took and things I needed.

I average about five or less models a year. It would probably take me about two or less years to finish my entire collection, which is small. I have no plans on buying any new kits until I’m down to my last two kits-- unless I find something interesting and it’s only available for a limited time. I'll probably end up breaking my own rule and buy a  kit that does not interest but has nice box artBig Smile [:D]. I did it last week. lol

I build about 5 models a year (at least, that is my target) and have a stash of 100 kits (okay, I stopped counting at 100, it's probably 110). Or about 20 years of works, but its best to add 5 extra years for the more complex kits (vac forms etc.)

So, I have got 25 years of work/hobby ahead of me. Since I am 27, my whole stash should be fhinished before I retire! Does this mean I can buy more? Propeller [8-]

It means you're on your way to needing to rent a space at the self-storage place off the interstate so you can keep the huge stash you're gonna have by the time you retire.Smile [:)]

Don't get me wrong.... I love my stash.  Sometimes it a huge stress reliever just sitting in front of it and basking in all it's glory.  I think about all the fun and relaxation concentrated on those shelves.  I have every intention of building every one of those kits, because, otherwise I would not have bought them.  I have a project or idea for almost every kit.  My problem is I have to start building faster than I buy.

And if I don't get through them all before I hit that big Hobbystore in the Sky, that's what my son is for.

No biggy.

sometimes just the opposite for me i look at the stash and it stresses me out.

too many-choices and i keep buying but i only buy 1-3 a month for the last 6-8 months prior to that it was 8-13 a month

then the way i build ..... most people find strange

i build tanks till i get tired of them then cars  till i get tired etc

and the other thing i do is gather up all the same type of kits  say jap zeroes

and build the 6 at once it speeds up the building time to the time it takes for 4  thus reducing the stash at a faster rate

I tried counting my stash, I'm upto 250+, and maybe half way.  As I build maybe 5-6 a year, I might be a wee while.  However, I have set myself a goal to have as many done by the Spring as I can (as I plan to move then).  Let me see, hmm 35 weeks, 2 models a day, that should be perfect!  Er, there is a flaw to this plan though...

Actually, I have a few stashes, as follows:
Long term.  Those which I will do, one day, but require a lot more skill than I can now muster
Medium term.  To be done, but not in the next month or so
Short term.  To be started within a month
Workbench.  Actually started, or about to be.

that meant you shouldn't be building as much as more will get damaged during transport!

Good point!  I haven't decided if to keep the built ones, or not.  So far, all my aircraft have been gratefully received by the 5 year old Air Force, motto: let's make our aircraft dive like submarines.  Amazing how many 5 year olds I suddenly know!

I recently went through and inventoried my stash...96 unbuilt kits at the rate of 10-12 per year works out to about 8-10 years provided no new additions are made. And that, of course, is the catch. Acquisition rate has slowed down dramatically lately, at least on the kit side...now it's more oriented towards the AM/accessory side. Big Smile [:D]

Which adds time to builds, thus decreasing your build rate.  Further proof that the more you spend on this hobby, the less you actually accomplish.  Dead [xx(]Black Eye [B)]Banged Head [banghead]

He might have, but is he sharing?  Oh dear, I bought 3 more today too: an Emhar F3H Demon, a Hasagawa F-16D IDF, a Hasagawa Bf-109 E-3 Condor Legion (all second hand)
