“I loved the design of this ship as soon as I saw it in ‘Star Trek: First Contact,’” says Wayne. He built Ertl/AMT’s 1/1,400 scale USS Enterprise-E starship and airbrushed the “aztek” panelling mostly with Tamiya acrylics. Smaller details were hand-painted. “There are no aftermarket parts used,” he says, “but I modified the deflector trench and warp nacelle pylons to more accurately reflect the filming miniature.” Wayne designed and built the lighting system, which includes discrete strobe systems for anti-collision and positioning beacons. “The pulsating effect seen in the warp nacelles, the main deflector dish, and roughly half of the cabin windows were drilled out by hand so they could appear lighted,” he says. Wayne spent about 17 months on the model.
