Joey Reinleib

Smithtown, New York

With its 40" wingspan, Guillow’s P-38 is about 1/16 scale. “This is basically a stick-and-tissue kind of kit, but that's where the resemblance ends,” writes Joey. He skinned the plane with 1/32" balsa and applied three coats of polyester resin, sanding between coats. For a dazzling metallic finish, he used drawings to cut individual panels from aluminum wrapping paper and attached them with double-backed TwinTac adhesive. The props, spinners, and landing gear are painted with Tamiya acrylics; the nose art is inspired by 1950s pinup icon Betty Page.
