After building AMT/Ertl’s 1/420 scale USS Defiant from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” Joel says, “I liked the shape of the Defiant, but I decided to give it more of a [military] look instead of the decorative graphics I thought were too gaudy for a warship.” He installed a garland of 10 battery-powered LEDs and used red acetate over the large oval openings, scoring and cutting pieces to fit. Spray-can paint finished the starship.
