Good luck on it.  It looks way to OD-ish to me though.

Well, thanks to a short workday, I got some more progress today. Weathered and dullcoated, some fiddley bits, all that's left is the Hellfires, and rotor(looks like a nightmare, I'm dreading it!!!)

I've had enough of this one. Thought I was winning the race, only to trip up on the last hurdle. (I'm not gonna point out my blunder, any well seasoned rotorhead will spot it) Maybe I'll come back to it someday for a few touches. It's close enough to sit on my shelf, and I still like it. I had planned to add a copilot, standing close by, but just lost interest. Anyway, here goes:

Well, it was a pleasure to hang out over here for a little while, but I've had enough change of pace for a little while. Got 4 more choppers in the stash, I'll be back.

The rotor head should be flat black with a steel drybrushing, not silver.  The rotor blades are on backwards too.  Looks like you have a good, clean build.  You just need to take a little more time on the research and acccuracy next time.

Yeah, I pretty much gave up there, at the end. Once I discovered the blade blunder, just lost heart, screw it. I have pics showing both, silver and black rotorheads(the silver is much darker than what I did) And like I said, I had planned to add a CO-pilot standing close by. Oh well, she's got a place on my shelf none the less.

Despite the inaccuracies, I think you did a good job w/ the techniques you were going for. You could have painted if pink for all I care, but the weathering, shading, etc techniques are well done.

Just curious as to how you painted the disco ball? I'll be referencing this thread when I break out my 58D. If you've got more pics, PLEASE post them. Also, any chance you might retake some of the blurry ones?

Again .... good job ... IMO.

You are probably confusing earlier OH-58 models with silver rotor heads.  The D model has always had a blacked out rotor head.  Its not horrible and could probably be fixed if you wanted to, or chalk it up to a learning experience for the next one.

Modelchasm,

For the disco ball, a good technique is to first paint it silver, then use clear red, amber, and blue in varying layers to acheive the desired effect.

Thanks for that ARTY, but do you wait for each layer to dry? Or are you talking about mixing the red, amber and blue? (Sorry Ferm, not trying to steal the thread .... just trying to learn...)

I hersitate to wade into the fray here, but Fermis is, in fact, correct and the first OH-58D's did have silver colored (maybe actually a light matte gray) rotor heads.  Here's the pics to prove it.

Thanks Scott. The "disco" ball is just testors gold(I'm clueless bout that thing, but I know now for next time) This one does get chalked up as a learning experience, you win some, you lose some. It really looks green, green in the pics, it is actually a bit darker, still coulda used a drop or two of black in the mix. I would like to get up a better pic or 2, no macro setting, I'll try some other settings.

OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Helicopter

There's a couple silver rotorheads, I'm not completely off base.

I do appreciat your tips and advice, some ding dongs just have to learn the hard way!!!

The pic you have posted is one of the early OH-58D test models (actually modified C models).  You can tell by the full doors with windows and the test set in front of the skids as opposed to the weapons pylons.  Cool pic though, just not of opeartional OH-58Ds.

I wait for each color to dry on the disco ball before applying the next.  This allows light to pass through them and reflect back different colors from differnt angles, just like the real thing.

That makes sense .... Does it matter in which order you paint them then? Thanks again ...

I don't think it really does.  I go from dark to light though; darkest color first.

Fermis - Very nice! Thumbs Up [tup]

Inaccuracies? I don't see 'em... don't know the first thing about 'em! Wink [;)] Besides, it looks sweet and that's all that matters.

I'm actually building my first helicopter now. Check it out in the Helicopter Group Build... if ya got more to build, join up while you're at it. I know that mine isn't accurate. Unless I'm building something very specific, details go out the window and I do it the way that I like it!

So don't lose heart... you did a great job and I think she looks fantastic! Can't wait to see the next one!

I was wondering just exactly what the earliest OH-58D's looked like during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. So I did a little hunting through the Army Aviation Museum archives.  While many looked like the standard OH-58D with the faired over back window, I found quite a few that still had them.  These images are from the DOD and were taken during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  I have quite a few of stateside OH-58D's with the gray/sliver rotorhead, but it appears that they were all painted black before they went overseas.

Hi Ray.  Yup, those are the very early versions that were unarmed scout helos.  The unarmed scout role was the original intent for the OH-58D.  It was actually funded and built by the Artillery Branch as an air observer platform and laser designator for Coperhead laser-guided artillery rounds.  Once the Aviation boys cought wind of it though, they took over the program and developed it into the armed attack/scout helo we know today as the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior.  Cool pics.  As you said though, all operational ones oversees had the blacked-out rotor heads.

Assuming you mean in 1/35th scale, it would be much easier to start with their AH-60L DAP kit (actually an MH-60L since the US military doesn't use the AH, Attack Helicopter, designation with Blackhawks).  The DAP kit has all the parts form their previous UH-60A/L and MH-60G kits included, plus an extra sprue with updated MH-60L parts.  The UH kit is missing key MH parts such as the square stabilator, beefier door gun mounts and M134 miniguns, FLIR Turret, Weather radar, etc., ect.

Like I said in the BHD thread, check out this post for all you need to know about Op Gothic Serpent MH-60s.
