"WIP" Revell 1:48 AH-64 Apache

Well like I said, I was doing a search since I just got the old Revellogram kit in a trade, and this came up in the search. Wasn't trying to argue that perhaps operational  Apaches weren't OD, just found it interesting that there were some that color.

I sometimes find that these old threads can hold interesting tidbits of information, and can help with insight and knowledge.  Don't really mind something showing up that was before my time.

No feathers ruffled at all or anything else.  I just find it funny when people bring up very old threads.  Why not just start your own new one if it is now relevant.

Sorry your feathers are ruffled. I just got a Apache kit and was doing research on it and it brought me to this thread and I found 3 Apaches in OD green and thought it would be interesting to post. Sheesh. People are getting pissy.

Talk about dead thread revival.  I thought this discussion was done with five years ago.  I guess not.

For what it's worth found these.  They appear to be OD.

Not sure what the deal is with these, but they are probably Hughes prototypes since the pilots are wearing white helmets and the blades have yellow tips.  The colors could appear off from the older film too. 

I still contend that no operational Apaches were/are OD.  All are Helo Drab Green except one unit from the South Carolina National Guard's 1st Squadron, 151st Aviation Regiment who painted their aircraft two-tone grey before deploying to Iraq a few years ago.

With one painted in standard Helo Drab Green behind it.

According to the old saw....one constant- if it moves, salute it, if it doesn't move, paint it.

But a plane fresh out of the paint shop looks way different than one with even just 20-25 flights.  A ship out of refit will be way cleaner and brighter than the same vessel after 3 months at sea.

There are two words that have no application in reference to the U.S. Military; they are 'always' and 'never'. When dealing with the military, especially in the realm of colors or aircraft or armor or ship classes, there are no absolutes.

Twenty years of service taught me that, among other fascinating little tidbits.

Right, but there are none on the AH-64A model posted.  Also, the pod you linked to is only in the testing phase and has not been bought or fielded by the US Army yet.

Guess it depends on which version of the prototype.  The prototype pic I showed is definitely Helo Drab.  It is safe to say that no operational AH-64s were OD though.

Apaches were never in OD.  They have always come in Helo Drab Green.  Even the original YAH-64 prototype was Helo Drab Green.

 

Sorry, Gino.  Gonna have to disagree there.  This YAH-64 definitely ain't helo drab.  Sure looks OD to me.

That's is really nice! such an incredible machine in real life... love the targeting pods. 

Looks good Toshi. Another rapid fire build. You can really through them together pretty fast; I can hardly keep up.

Good job.  Even with the wrong colors and glossy finish (not my thing) it still came out looking pretty nice.

A-64 APACHE COMPLETED!

Although I have made errors in the building process of the Apache as my knowledge of helicopters are a bare minimum, I definately had fun assembling the A-64.  Having fun is what it's all about.  A learning process it was, and a great one at that.    

I want to thank the helicopter thread forum members for making me feel at home, after everything is said and done, we are all here to learn, share, and ultimately to enjoy our unique hobby.  

While I built the Apache, I also took the time out to complete a A-7A Corsair II.  You can view the Corsair II on the aircraft thread.  As the Apache was my second helicopter ever built, on the other hand the A-7A is only my 4th all around jet fighter.  As I mentioned earlier in this thread, my favorite model kits to assemble are of WWII fighters and bombers.  These builds were a nice change of pace.

My next project is a huge undertaking, it is a Tamiya 1:32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk. VIII, this will definately challenge my technique as well as having it an extremely fun build.  The Spitfire will be on the aircraft thread if anyone is interested in taking a look and following along.  Until then, please view the completed Apache below.  Once again, thank you all helicopter thread, forum members for excepting me on this wonderful project.

To my fellow forum members,

I was able to AB the Apache, my next step was to spray a gloss clear coat to prepare for the decals.  Unfortunately, it is way too humid outside.  I'll wait till this evening when things cool down a bit before I attempt any type of spraying.
