Academy 1/48 MH-6 WIF
Posted by oortiz10 on Monday, February 20, 2023 3:01 AM

OK FSM, here's my 2nd completion of 2023 and my first of 2 OH-6s that I'm building for the Git-R-Done GB.

I've always wanted to build a 20th SOS UH-1N, but I have been intimidated by the Leopard camo scheme I want to do. So, I figured this little build would be good practice to see if I can pull it off before I tried it on the Huey. I have to say, I'm rather pleased with the way it turned out.

This is Academy's MH-6 "Stealth Helicopter" boxing built up as a 20th SOS WIF. I swapped the seats with the ones from AMP's OH-6 and detailed them with some "seat covers" (cut from Band-Aids) and some paper seatbelts. The rocket pods, mini-guns and ammo chutes are from the spares box. The decals are from the spares drawer. Everything, except the fine wire antenna and the aforementioned additions, is from the box. Paint is AK Real Color lacquers sprayed through my Sotar, and washes are Flory's.

Let's take a look, shall we?

Of course, comments, questions and criticisms are welcome. Now that this little guy's done, I can turn my attention to the (dreadful) AMP OH-6.

Thanks for lookin'!

Turned out great O!  The camo looks fantastic.  I really love these little kits.  I've built a few and recently bought a couple more.  BTW what did you use for the canopy tint?

Thanks,

John

...what did you use for the canopy tint?

Hey John, thanks for the pat on the back. It's a fun little kit to build. Fit was pretty good. I was especially impressed with the fit of the windscreen. Speaking of the windscreen, it came molded in that gold tint. That's a major reason why I chose to do a WIF with it. Really, the only challenges came with the windscreen. Not so much the fit, but the frames are molded on the inside, so masking the exterior frames was a little bit of a challenge. That's why mine aren't very sharp. That being said, Academy's windscreen molding is leaps and bounds better than AMP's. The only thing I did was use some Tamiya smoke on the overhead panes to give it a tinted look. I didn't think the transparent green that's usually seen on helos' overhead panels would have looked good on this gold (yellow?) tint.

Again, thanks for looking and the kudos. I'm glad you like it. On to AMP's...kit. Oh, and the Kiowas!
