British Chinook HELP!

Gregers,
I found a company called Atlantis Alliance that carries 1/76 scale Rovers from two different companies, CMSC and BW. They both show multiple versions of the rover available in this scale. Don't know about their quality as there were no pictures. From what I have read, the SAS used Type 110 Rovers armed with a .50 cal mg, GPMG's, 40mm gernade launchers and/or Milan missiles.
If you are interested in doing one in 1/35, Accurate Armour has several resin kits of high quality (and high price) including a nice XD.

Hi Philp,
Watched a programme on tv a couple of weeks ago. Modern pilots were re-enacting the Dam Busters run. To give them some idea of what it was like from a gunners point, they flew some of them to a live firing range. The aircraft was a Chinook, commentator referred to weapons as M60. One was mounted on ramp, one out of side window, was not obvious which side.

Hi Philip just out of curiosity are you putting a landie in your chinook?if so which kit are you using? i am curious because like Michealvk i am a landie fanatic too and build landrover kits as well as aircraft. The only landrovers in that scale that i know of are JB models kits of a series 2 and fc101 and neither of these where usd by the SAS during desert storm (as far as i know anyway)...cheers...Gregers

I may just have found what you need !!
I found this site when searching for something else. It lists aircraft/heli serial No's from the countries that took part in D/storm. Some of the entries have pics' but not all. Check the UK list, they have several pics' of 7Sqn's "night cam" Chinooks.
For all you D/storm fans, the list is fairly extensive.
IE: UK ,USA, NewZealand,France, to name a few. Not only heli's but fixed wing too. Definately one for my fav' list.

If you look on the General Modelling Discussion section of this forum, you'll find a post entitled 'Free Online Image Gallery' , thread posted by Ron USMC.

Follow the link in his post, as I've just uploaded a picture I took of Chinook ZA707 (EV) at RAF Mildenhall in 91.

A really good reference (if you can get hold of a copy in the USA) is a UK magazine 'Model Aircraft Monthly' Volume 2, Issue 2 (February 2003) which has a 7 page photo feature on RAF Chinook colours, with about 12 shots of Desert Storm machines, in 3 or 4 different schemes. It's a back issue, but you should be able to get hold of a copy at www.sampublications.com.

Hope this is of use, but I don't envy you hand painting that colour scheme!

try going to the source, RAF Odiham may have a website, or try 7 Squadron, I'm sure they would have one, maybe even Boeing?

Hi Philp, Cannot help with the SAS Landy's but the Chinook's were obviously painted in the UK Desert Pink scheme and most likely black undersides, but when I saw ZA707 EV at RAF Mildenhall the ' mottled ' paint on the fuselage sides i'm pretty sure was a very and I mean VERY dark green almost black ( one of those things you make a mental note of at the time ). This " mottle " was applied with ordinary paint brushes and looked very hap-hazard.
My photo ( at Mildenhall ) was taken from the port side and the crew door was open and had no door gun fitted and no gun mounted on the rear door.
Although at other times I have seen miniguns fitted to the front window ( starb. side ) cannot remember if i've seen one on the door, as for the ramp I have seen GPMG's in this location on a couple of times.
Hope this has been of some help, unfortunately the old grey matter fades a bit with time.
