My first helo build/OH-58 Kiowa

This is the 1/48 Testor's kit, which I rarely ever see in model shops, or on internet sites.

Straight out of the box, kit decals. Not sure about that gun mounted on the port cargo door.

I drilled out as much of the exhaust pipes as I could, and I attempted to paint some sort of squadron patch on the co-pilot's shoulder. From a distance it looks like it could be. The green windows were painted using aerosol transparent green paint.

The pilot features a painted on American flag on his shoulder. The collective looks to be about the size of the barrel of a softball bat!!

Looks pretty good. Some OH-58A/Cs in Vietnam did carry the port side minigun as well. It didn't really look like that though, the kit one is way too big and chunky, just like the collective you mentioned. You did a nice job on it though.

Thanks Gino. I've got three different variants of the Black Hawk I'm working on in 1/48 right now, just starting actually. One of them is going to be an MH-60K. I've got the Acadamy/Minicraft kit with the Cobra detail set. The other two kits are both Acadamy as well, even though one is in a Revell box. I haven't made up my mind which variants those two will become. I might need to call on you and your helo-mates for some info about the "K" variant especially, since it is a Spec Ops bird and references are a little harder to come by.

Looking great! Terrific paint job!!
Guess this is the old Fujimi kit. It IS far too chunky (f.i. look at the landing gear!) and I also remember the ridiculously big collective (it's as big as the machine gun).
If you like the subject, Italeri rereleased the old 1:48 Esci OH58, which actually is a lot better than the Testors/ Fujimi one.

Thanks for sharing!

Little note for your reference, American Flag is always on the right shoulder, left shoulder is for unit patch where he is currently assigned

OOOOoooooopsss. Could've swore I checked that out first. Maybe the photo I had was a reverse negative, or other services have it the other way. Next time, I'll know. Thanks grandadjohn.

Nice work. Specially for your first helo.
I agree that the minigun looks chunky, but you'll do better with a better kit.
