Anyone Build The Academy AH-60L DAP?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 18, 2003 10:05 AM
This kit is in at the shop, was wondering if anyone has built it yet?

I was contemplating trying a Helicopter for the first time, is this the one?

I wanted an Afghanistan Version, camo patterns? or subdued gray?

Thanks

Dave,

I haven't built it yet, but from what I've heard, its a phenomenal kit. Paint scheme is pretty straightforward, Model Master "US Army Helo Drab". Good luck!

It's a great chopper, the instructions are very easy to follow, quite a few sub-assemblies so you can build several areas of the chopper very quickly, and it's in a scale that looks great. if you build it you might want to consider some more ditailing inside the cargo area and the cabin, but other than that it's a great helo. Since it was developed and flown by the 160th SOAR solely, the paint scheme should be black

Ricky,

Black? Are you sure? I was looking at one of the 160th birds on Tuesday morning that was on a layover at Ft. Hood. It was Helo Drab all the way. NIIICE bird too! Gotta build one of em soon!

Most of the 160th birds are flat black but aged to various degrees so you see plenty of color variations. Kind of reminds me of the 'interior black' Model Master came out with. The United States Army Markings and tail numbers are olive drab. The Cobra Company has a set of decals for this ... the kits yellow decals are not accurate. There's not a lot of difference between a new finish of Helo Drab and an older coating of flat black. I've got my kit but have not started it. Looks like a great kit to me ... of the MH-60L. (No such thing as an AH-60L ... at least not officially).
Good luck,
Paul

Paul,

Ah, that explains it. The flat black used to paint the "UNITED STATES ARMY" on helo drab machines usually fades to a charcoal grey, giving the same degree of contrast as OD on flat black. I didn't get a long look at that 160th machine at Hood, but what I did see was pretty awesome. Maybe its just me, but it looked meaner than the other UH-60As it was sharing the hangar with. LOL

Of course that bulbous nose radar doesn't help much either !
