Revell Monogram's AH-64 Apache

FineScale did a review of a AH-64 Apache in their March 2002 issue. Unfortunately, I don't think it was by Revell. But if it helps ...

If you're talking about the 1/32 kit, I'm in the process of building one right now. Good kit overall, but it needs a LOT of improvement to be brought up to current standard. When the kit was originally made in the early 80s, the Apache was just becoming operational. I've added a full wire-strike kit to mine, accurized the cockpit a bit, added a chaff/flare dispenser, and put a bunch of antennas on that don't come with the kit.

The good news is, the shape of the aircraft overall is great, and you just can't beat the sheer size of the kit! I'll be posting some pics on my website at http://cobrahistorian.tripod.com

I fully agree with Jon but would add one other note. My kit went together well with a couple of exceptions. The fuselage section where the 30mm chain gun mounts does not mate up well with the rest of the lower sections. Also, the canopy leaves an obvious gap at the very front (not sides) where the CPGs windshield wiper is mounted. Be sure and decide how you want to correct this BEFORE glueing the canopy to the fuselage or you're in for a lot of fun correcting it afterwards.

Yeah, I found that out the hard way. Ended up shimming it with sheet styrene. It looks pretty good now. One other thing, the rocket pods are totally inaccurate. You'd almost be better off getting the XM-200 pods from Cobra Company and converting them to the lightweight M-261 pods. The modern pods have flush faces, no rim around the edge of the pod front. They're completely cylindrical too, no ridge along the bottom or straps on the sides.

I'm actually thinking about doing a D model conversion with one of the Revell kits, just to see if I can do it. I know Kangnam/IMex has the 35th scale, and do intend on building em too, but I want to see what I can do with the Revell kit.

im currently on several scale of this. Model A and D from academy and Revell scale 144. just dont like the chinese doing this kit, the canopy is not clear. Mine was not a snap on kit. But i find this interesting. I also got an unmade 72 scale model of apache model D. you'll hear from me when i started on this one. More power to you all modellers.

What did you think of the Academy kits? I was kinda disappointed with them. The 1/32 Revell A model is much better (and bigger). Anyone else got any opinion on the Academy Apaches?

My 1/72 scale Apache model A from Academy is well trimmed. Im doing a visual inspection of this model at moment, savoring the smell and all. I dont know about larger scales, but i guess it has more details and more expensive.
