Is such a thing available?

I'd like to scratchbuild one in 1/48th, but need a starting point. Any suggestions?

There is, however.  They are under tight wraps.  Unless you know someone at Sikorsky or who works on the S-76 or flies one.  I've been trying for years to get something for reference.  I have a 1/48 S-76B body w/ interior.  I scratched made the main blades but need to make the landing gears, wheels, tail rotor and  rotor head w/ inti-vibration heads.  I'm planning to make RTV molds and cast the parts.  I also need to make 2 descent body halfes to cast up a vacuum form mold and do it out of clear styrene.  Trying to find an individual resale sheets the size I need is another issue.

How are you planning to go about it?

My long sitting idle S-76 project pics here.

Right now, I'm just on my 1/32 kits.

Cheers,
John

Hey John, that's a nice start you have there!

The best I could come up with was getting the 3 views off of the Sikorsky s-76 PDF from their website. I'm not entirely sure how accurate they are though. When I resized them to 1/48th, the dimensions didn't match up.

I was thinking of going with the same idea as the one you had (clear sheets vacuumed over a buck) or regular ABS/Styrene vacuumed and forming/cutting out windows from clear sheet. The second is more complicated, but I've had some experience making windows and canopies that way and I like the challenge.

Truth be told, I'd turn it into the HX-1 from the Airwolf episode....HX-1!

I work for a company that operates about 50 or so S-76s in addition to other types. I have access to all the manuals, so if you can give me an idea of what you need, I might be able to help. I might not be able to get "blueprints' but I should be able to get some technical diagrams for you.

Hello Jonathan, would that be a helicopter fleet for the oil rigs? I read that they're a popular transport for that industry.

Yeah, anything that would be helpful for accurate reference would be greatly appreciated. Technical diagrams. dimensions, etc.... I'm sure John (AirMedical) would agree. That is a generous offer.

Starting to get excited now!

Jonathan,

Thanks!  Please, anything would be of help.  The primary info I have is on the S-76A II.  Would be interested in B and C's also.  I understand the B & C share the same airframe. (?)

I was told from a fella that used to work for Keystone Helicopters that a lot of the Sikorsky public-published data with dimension was never exact because Sikorsky was very protective of their info.  Which makes sence.

Feel free to drop me an email.  johneagle777@yahoo.com

Cheers,
John

Dennis,

Thanks for the kind words!
Oh yah, I remember the HX1 very well.  The S-76 is my favorite helo.

I have a gallon of RTV that I use to make my casting molds.  So I have plenty to make whatever.
The gentleman I got my S-76B from sadly passed away a few years back.  He and another fella (also passed away) that worked for Sikorsky made 1/48 scale S-76 models of the A & B.  He happened to have an old B he had in storage and sent me what he had.  He didn't have the molds as Sikorsky bought them from the guys and destroyed them.  I have a picture he made of a 1/48 VS-300 and a S-76A Life Flight flying together.  It was featured in an old Finescale Modeler magazine back in the 80's.  I'll try and take a dig of it.  I would like to frame it one day.  His wife and I are in contact from time to time.  When I first met them, they were the sweetest people.  Good people!

Dennis, I'd like to keep in touch with you.  I happen to have a vacuum-former that can do a 1/48 body.  I have it on lend for the moment.  If you find any clear styrene or ABS that can be purchased individually, let me know.  Drop me an email, we can chat further if you like. johneagle777@yahoo.com

Gotta run,
Cheers,
John

Hey John,

Sorry to hear about your friend. There's no school like the old school. There is something about the "old days" of model making that fascinate me. I've heard good stories from some cagey veterans of the hand-craft (pre modern technology and computer) days. It sounds as though he liked his job. The guys I know (and myself included) keep the "extras" around, just in case. It was pretty cool of him to pass it on to you.

I've got a vacformer set-up so we're good to go in case you lose access to yours. What size and thickness of sheet plastic are you looking for? If comes down to it, I can get a larger sheet and cut it down to size. Not a problem.

Jonathan, if we can get this project going, would you be interested in an S-76? Any help you can give us would be fantastic. I certainly wouldn't mind sending you one for your help. Let me/us know. Thanks again!

Dennis
