SH-34J Seabat help
Posted by cyeargin on Monday, June 2, 2008 3:40 PM

I am taking a shot at converting Revell's 1/72 scale kit of the Sikorsky H-34G to a US Navy SH-34J Seabat, using Ed Barthelmes' article in the April 2005 FSM as a guide. I plan on replacing the cowling screens with PE screens from the Eduard set as Mr. Barthelmes did, but I need some help in clarifying one issue: since the interior of the cowl becomes visible using the screens, he mentioned using a "suitable radial engine" from his spares box, but no mention of the original source. What would be an appropriate aftermarket engine or one I could obtain from another kit that would be correct or close enough for this application? Also, does anyone have a source of a picture of the belly-mounted APN-97 antennae to assist with scratch-building? My attempts at Googling have failed me thus far...Thanks in advance for the help.

The various H-34s used a 9 cylinder Wright radial engine. Here is a wikipedia entry on that engine which includes a list of aircraft that used the engine.

Here is a shot with the nose clamshell open showing the motor

Unless you plan on opening the engine cowling doors I wouldn't worry about it.  You can't see the engine through those grills.  What you see through them is a cavity with a cooling fan and a driveshaft.  Not much in there.  I'd post pictures but the computer they are on crashed.
