MIG-17PF question
Posted by dirtball on Sunday, August 10, 2008 5:15 PM
Hey guys. I need some info.Does anyone have decals for a Vietnam era PF. Tons of F models and I know they flew them. Also does anyone have good cockpit referances? I`ve checked all the usual sites and then some and come up empty. The few pics I`ve seen show the radar scope top right of IP with a black "cone" to look through. TREXX you can help. The one at the musium is SUPPOSED to be a PF Vietnam. But info on it is still clasified. Can you get pics of the pit?? Or any info on the aircraft its self, huh, ol buddy??Oh yea its all 1/32...........Harv

The 17 at the museum looks like a PF to me.  The canopy is pretty poor on it, but perhaps it can be opened.  It was a Czech built airrplane I am pretty sure.  I have a few photos on my website here, all exterior:

John, thanks for the post and pics. I also have a ton of shots I took just a couple of months ago. I find it strange that all the web sites still say info on how we aquired the 17 and how it got here is still classified.I`m really interested in pit shots as I explained, I need proof of the radar position on IP and the "cone" they looked through.I have seen one on the web, But havent been able to re-find it. And there is not much info on Vietnam 17PF`s. Such as markings, camo, and such. I have a Trump coming with some Eduard stuff, and being the detail nut I am, I need the info...........Harv

Harv, I have an Osprey book which has a color profile of a 17PF, all silver with the Bort number 4721.  There are also a view photos of dubious quality of PF's.  The narrative odf a kill made by 4721 is in the book.  I'll try to get them scanned tomorrow.  No PF cockpits but there is a good photo of a MiG-17 cockpit simulator.  I'll be at the museum on Tuesday and see if there is any means of getting cockpit photos.

According to my reference library sources, teh 17PF only saw limited use with the NVPAF. I have some photos of them in overall NMF and  a few in an overall "air superiority gray". Markings were very basic with only national insignia, and bort numbers. I can get you some specific ones if you would like.

Harv, I found out today that most of the MiG-17PF cockpit is incomplete, so pictures will not be too helpful.  Sorry.  The cutaway drawing does show the radar hood installed in the cockpit area.

This info comes from two books, both by Istvan Toperczer: "MiG-17 and MiG-19 units of the Vietnam War", and "Air War Over North Viet Nam".

MiG-17PFs were assigned Bort numbers 4720 thru 4729. In photos 4726 appears to be A.S.Gray while 4721 may be in either NMF or AS Gray. A poor quality night photo shows another PF with a bort number ending in 452. This MiG also appears to be gray.

Great photograph! Dang those Ruskies are messy gents! HAAA!

But seriously, check out how the pilot would tilt his head like biting a taco to look into the radar shroud. Incredible.
