1/48 B-17 Group Build...ALL INVITED TO JOIN!

Oh....I found a forum about that on another website, and it wasn't on decals though, just insignias....im not sure if theres one on decals

Ugh, doing all this research, looking at other peoples builds and seeing these pictures I just found of my bird makes me want to get going on the build again, but I have to wait another month.  This project has been going on 3 years now and this forum was the kick in the pants I needed to get this done.

Don't feel too bad, mine took a little over two and a half years to finish.

Dang I keep trying to upload a wartime photo of my plane but it won't work....it showed an engine in detail with some sort of device on top of the crankcase.  It was also unsual in the fact that it had almost no paint chipping even though it had flown 47 missions at the time the picture was taken

If the device is on the front of the engine it may be the prop governer.

If you're trying to upload directly from your harddrive?  Can't do it... You need to upload it to a photo-hosting site like Photo-Bucket first..

Thanks Hans, here it is......and yea, I think it is the prop governor, and paragon makes a set with some wing intakes, but I'm just gonna make mine out of some scrap plastic.   See the full size image to see the detail

I actually have a ton of stuff on this plane but havent got a clear pic of the pg's I finaly bought the 1/12 Wright Cyclone monogram kit ,but its pg is more internal than external,engine development was moving at aa very accelerated pace by the end of WW2 .I think a number of pg's were used .Wikipedia is a good source if you feeed in Wright Cyclone

I had never really noticed the PGs especially on builds, but these pics show they are quite noticeable, so I have to make them if I wanna be accurate

I know that I don't really have anything to add here at this time, I just wanted to say, thank you for sharing this with us. This is really wonderful, and it brings back memories of when I used to build these, and paint them with my brother.  I have fond memories of a few of these bombers personally, and if I can help in any way, I do have some parts that you can have if you need them. I also have old guitar strings (electric) from my guitars that I save from time to time. I use these for hoses, and conduits in airplanes, and sci-fi builds. I don't have a lot of airplanes anymore, but have one that I built a while ago that I'll share, but I'm not  going to walk on this thread. I usually build civilan, and sci-fi for other people, but I'll build planes again when I get the opportunity to.  Thank you once again for posting this, even if I didn't get the chance to jump on board when this thread was new.

I got another weird question.  Were the flash tubes on the chin turret guns factory applied or field applied?  I've got pictures of my plane with and without flash tubes (look at the 1st and 3rd pictures above), which means they were added sometime between the 1st and 47th mission, but seeing as they weren't present on the picture of the plane just prior to the first mission I'm thinking they were field applied.  I've got regular barrels and flash tubed barrels and it probably doesn't matter which ones I use but I just thought I'd ask anyways

Oh, and does anyone know the part number on the chin turret? I need to order a new one from Revell

The flash suppressor question has the same answer as the decal question ,its your build so.............

My visB-17 is Kit  # 5614, chin turret part # is 6 , top plate is part # 8 , guns are #45 -a  3 part assy.

I just need the turret....i got the guns and top plate....hopefully its the same number as in the G kit #5600

Ok it is the same part number....I found a downloadable instruction sheet from revell.com.  Man I can't wait to start work again

That was a good question and I decided to check..

According to my main B-17 reference (my uncle Stan, ex-SSG & B-17 tail gunner- 46 missions) blast (not flash) tubes, sights, ammo feed chutes, and various other items for the aircraft were packed with the rest of the BII (Basic Issue Items) and installed at group-maintenence level after testing...  Then after they were ferried to the particular command, squadron armorers, along with the gunners, made the call on whether the blast tubes stayed installed or not.  The barrels of the turret guns were wrapped in a kind of heavy waxed paper and secured with tape at the factory for ferrying...

Man you should've asked like three weeks ago, I would've had three of 'em.  I would've had the fourth one, as I used Aires engines on my 17, but I had to cut the fourth one for measuring purposes.  Threw them out with the box. 

No biggy pilot, I can just get some from revell

Just ordered some more figures today which puts my figure count at 14  for my diorama.  It also brings my crew member count to a perfect 10.  Lets see, I'm  using..... 6 revell figures (from a couple different kits), 5 Verlinden figures from 2 different kits, and now the 3 CMK figures I ordered today.   Looks like I have ALOT of detail painting in my future  Lucky for me though, I love painting figures

Hans, you are a saint!  That would be great if you could throw them in there too.....if you don't need them for anything

Krow....um yeah, I dont have THAT much time lol.  Nice find on the Teknics bomber crew.  I gave up looking for that awhile ago.
