The Dragon And His Tail...
Posted by Atrium82 on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 1:23 AM

Hi,

I'd hate to bring this topic up again as I'm sure it's been discussed many times BUT I still can't find the definitive answer!

Was the dragon featured in this nose art coloured silver or green? It appears the general consensus is green, most models and artwork feature this and even a restored B-24 (until recently).

I'm going to embark on Academy's 1/72 B-24J kit and would like an accurate representation of this very cool 'plane.

 So folks, green or silver?

 Cheers

Steven

Always looked like it'd be green to me as far as I could judge from the B&W photos...

Green on green for sure. You understand there wasn't a Dragon.. etc except for in the post-war recreation, so on an all metal finish, green is it.

Neither.  The Dragon is a dark red.  Contemporary color photos have surfaced recently that show it as dark red, instead of the green that people thought for a long time.  The Minicraft 'Dragon & His Tail' kit has nice decals that have an accurate red color.

HTH!

Alex

Looks good Alex. The color photos are from your neck of the woods, a post war recreation, and the decals match. Dragon is green/green/gray, background red, highlights red.

Nope, Collings Foundation, and numerous decal companies have botched this, as, at the time, there were no known color photos of 'Dragon And His Tail'.  They have since surfaced, and now we know the Dragon's color.  Contemporary, as in WWII-era, color pics show Dragon and His Tail to be red.

Collings Foundation Replica

REAL 'Dragon And His Tail'

There are better contemporary shots in higher resolution of this bird in color, during or shortly after WWII, but you get the idea.

Cheers,
Alex

It sure looks like the real deal to me in color... Actually, upon closer examination, it looks to be both green and red in the Dragon's scales... That's the same pic I put in the link, Shark... I didn't hot-link it, but it looks like we're using the same site..

I'd always assumed (I know, I knowASS-etc), that it was green, seemingly a logical conclusion... That was even before they did it on the CF bird... I first saw the plane about 30 years ago in a magazine like Wings or Airpower, can't remember which...

On a side note, are there any B-24's in 1/48 scale? I am generally an Armor guy, but would like to model the aircraft of the Collings Foundation, since I have been up in a few of them (Their B-17, B-25, and B-24). Thanks in advance for any information!

Monogram released the 1/48 B-24J years ago, and there was later a Pro Modeler release of the B-24D.  There's also a re-release of the Pro Modeler B-24D, without the PE parts.  I don't know if you can find these in the LHS anymore , but there's quite a few on Ebay....

I have the Microscale sheet. 48-037 The dragon's color is green on the belly and not silver like the real painting. However, I don't know of any other 48th scale decal sheet.
