ok, having read and then re-read the original question, and finding it was in fact limited to WWII, then it's got to be the SPITFIRE! what is wrong with you people?!

I'm going to have to go with the sleek lines of the Gotha Go-229 flying wing. That counts, right? Mainstream however, P-40 was the best. Those spitfire fanatics certainly have something going for em too, though.

Gents
someone mentioned the MIG-3 as the most beautiful WW2 fighter. I could agree with him with no effort and wonder why most of us always talk about the same few hiper-known planes. In fact, there's life otside them. Revising pics of my friend Julio's models I've found this superb Macchi 202 "Folgore". How do you like it?

Hands down, no contest, far and away the best looking fighter of all time from the dawn of civilization until a zillion AD: The P-61 Black Widow (any variant).

Eric

PS. The F4U-4 & 5 are also up there on my list. Also, since a lot of people are mentioning the P-40, I cannot wait for the new bubble top version to come out!!!!!!!

For WWII my vote would be for the P-51 & BF-109
As for modern fighters, I'm surprised the F-14 doesn't have many fans (besides me)

Has to be the Spitfire.

I'm always a bit sceptical about the Spitfire until I see one in flight.

They are truly beautiful.

In terms of the Me163, small, without doubt, but lethal to who, the enemy or the pilot!!!!!

Karl

Currently on the bench: AZ Models 1/72 Mig 17PF

For elegance and sleek looking lines,it's a hard call between the Spitfire or FW 190.For a powerful predator look you've got to loye the sharklike lines of ME109,and don't overlook ,my personel favorite, the Hawker Tempest MK .V. Yours, and still new guy to the site , oatswilly

There are lots of beautiful fighters to come out of WWII, but for me the Spitfire as art far outdistances the rest.

Comments on some of the others:

P-51 - looks like a pregnant guppy in profile
P-38 - skinny legs
ME109 - dude with a (nice) big nose
Corsair - a beast !- kindof reminds me of a sea-lion - you know with those big front flippers
Zero - honorable mention
FW190 - honorable mention - those bow legs - either love'm or hate'm

The B model Mustang with a malcolm hood canopy, the P-38 and then the Corsair. In that order.

I think by far the neatest looking fighter from WW2 would have to be the Do335. Even though it never made into front line service it would have done a lot of damage if it would have.

The Best looking fighter, hmmm...

How about a vote for the Yak 3? I really admire the smooth lines, the little air intakes, prop spinner, canopy, etc, it has a very nice profile to it don't you think? Anyway, I liked it enough to snap up three eduard profi-pak kits of the the little fighter.

I' m have two favorites in this discussion, the Corsair looks graceful yet very menacing, with that huge prop and those cool gull wings. I also like the P61 black widow, to me its like a P 38 on steroids.

Doesn't come imediately to one's mind as W.W.2 fighters, but the 2 Lockheed YP-80A sent to the MTO are WW2 fighters and, to me, the best looking ones tup].
Ever seen the picture of them flying formation over Mt. Vesuvius with the camera plane?

Korea, the F-86 Sabre. I've always loved those armed with th 20mm cannons sent under Project Gunval. Had a faster rate of fire than the 50 cal. and denied the MiG-15's armament advantage.
The Soviet Lavochkin La-15 is a close second.

Vietnam: will be the F-4E. I've always loved the cannon-armed, long-nose Phantoms.

Gulf War: the F-15: beauty, elegance, manouverability, and...lethal!

Modern, the F-22. Beautiful, and simply ahead of anything else in the combat arena Wink [;)]

Spitfire, Spitfire and Spitfire!! All version of Spitfire!! Except those with the early dust filter under the engineDead [xx(]; it really looks like the ugly chin of Jay Leno or Brian Mulroney(i.e. ugly, clumsy, stupid, bad taste, gross, disgusting, etc) However, any Spit without the damn filter looks excellent. I particular like the Mk1 which without cannon; so streamline and elegant.

Just remember, boys and girls, ugly and bad designed planes are just like bad night talk show host or bad prime minister(or president)Dead [xx(] they are stupid, ugly, clumsy, bad taste, disgusting, stinky, dishonour, arrogant, incompetent, santanic, evil, annoying, close minded, greedy, selfish, etc, etc, etcAngry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]
