Tamiya Beaufighter completed
Posted by jeaton01 on Thursday, December 17, 2009 5:03 PM

Did this one for the Navy Air Wing GB, 1/48 Tamya Beaufighter TF X in Coastal Command service.  This kit is as good or better than the Tamiya Corsair, as to fit and engineering.  Some say the elevator trim tabs are on the wrong side of the elevators.  That confuses me because the one in the British War Museum has the actuators on the same side (top) as the kit.  I changed mine to the bottom before I saw that photo.  The colors are Dark Slate Grey/Extra Dark Sea over Sky Type S.  The kit instruction give a different scheme, but the consensus seems to be that this scheme is accurate.  I think it's prettier, I like the Coastal Command temperate scheme.  I separated the elevators and rudder and posed them offset to add some life, and I added cowl support struts and exhaust piping in the cowls, other than that it is out of the box.

Thanks for looking.

John

Looks good John! I built that kit a little over a year ago and you are right, very nice kit. I like your paint and addition of the cowl supports, something I neglected to do.
Question: What kind of lighting are you using for your photos? Something about the pics makes the paint and the background blend and I can't really make out the paint color. At least on my monitor it does. I wonder if I need to make adjustments to my monitor?

I don't know if the trim tabs are accurate or not but I do know that's one sharp looking Beau.

Beautiful John!  Bow Down

I really like that paint scheme as well as the subtle weathering. Very nice!

What color did you use on the cowl exhaust ring?  I like the way it looks.

Really nice build! The paint and decaling are both excellant. I've always thought this was one odd looking plane, but the more of them I see I'm beginning to get a new appreciation of this bird.

She looks absolutely stunning John.

All the photo references I have show the trim tab levers on the underside of the elevators. Also, in one of my reference books (Beaufort, Beaufighter and Mosquito in Australian Service - Stewart Wilson)  there's a diagram listing servicing panels and the "tab levers" are likewise, shown on the underside.

Thanks, one and all.I'm glad you all like it.  I appreciate the nice comments.

HK, the lighting is Tungsten, 5000 Kelvin, and that is what I used for white balance on my digital camera.  The background is white paper.  It looks about right on my monitors which are all flat screens.  The pictures are taken at F32, 3 second or 2 second exposures.

Phil, thanks for the trim tab information.  I have a book on the Beaufighter on the way, but used mostly net resources on this one.  One of these days I will do an Australian Beaufighter, I've had the decals for it for some time.

Jeremy, the cowl exhaust manifolds are painted with a mixture of Burnt Metal and Jet Exhaust by Model Master.

Very sharp and clean. I really like the Beaufighter, doesn't get the kudos it deserves.
