Monogram 1/72 B-52 D's WIP & B-52H
Posted by DantheMan85 on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 4:45 PM

I've been away for awhile from the model work bench,  I just about wanted to give up on the B-52's.  So many fit, filling problems with them, I've some how worked thought all that and have just finished up on the flat black coat for the under side.   I went around the edges and did some light sanding, so there is no rough edges.  Just finished on the first one, now about to start on the second one.  And I have a 52 H model in the works, that one is more of headache than the D models.  And I'm working on the spots were the paint bleed though the tape.

52 H model,

Not bad, not bad at all.  One little thing, the undersides and verticle tail were gloss black though.

Sometimes the radomes would fade flat with highlights of brown or redish brown.

Ikar01, for some reason I thought some were painted in a flat black under side, well I can do a quick gloss coat after I sand down the edges left by the tape.  The one at the USAF museum is painted in gloss black.  The under side is a paint hug lol.

My brother started on another 52 D model 1/72, but he's doing a White, and Aluminum finish, SAC.

I think these are your pictures Ikar01,

Those are mine.  I took them at Ellsworth in 1971 with a pop-out lens 126 camera that I kept hidden in my MA-1 jacket.  Those were taken on the alert pad, also known as the Christmas tree.

I came across pictures that Itook with a 110 instamatic.  I still have to get them printed off a disc but they will have shots of the wreckage of a BUFF that crashed and what was left was dumped on a rise immediately behind the Christmas tree.

I'll get them printed and posted as soon as I can.  I forgot about them until a couple days age when I found the disc.

When I was a kid B-52's were all over this area but they moved them out of Fairchild in the mid-90's when I was 10 ( I was really mad at the time). When I get better at the hobby I think I'll build a 92nd B-52, I think I could actually put a kill tag on it too, pretty sure we had the one B-52 with a fighter kill stationed here towards the end.

I remember seeing the mushroom cloud 10 miles away when one crashed at Skyfest back in 1994. Absolutely horrible and happened two days after the hospital was shot up killing five people. Worst two things that happened at Fairchild in the last thirty years happened in the same week.

There are some that call me... Nash

Thanks for sharing Hun Hunter, interesting story.  That must have been a sad week, the two events happening in the same week.  The two that I've worked on gave me many headaches, the H model even more.  Pretty sure the molds were made in the late 50's early 60's, and have not been touched, reworked, or fixed.  Last time I checked Revell and Monogram disconnected it, if you can't find one in a hobby shop, next best place to look would be on e-bay.

Both the B-52s that shot down migs were based out of U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield.  I talked to one of the tail gunners one night not long after the shoot down and he described what happened.  It was just plain dumb luck that I happened to be patroling in my jeep in the B-52 crew area and asked him how he was doing.  I didn't kn ow who he was and never heard of the incident, I was just checking on his condition, considering the time of night and all and we just started talking.

The Monogram B-52 first came out in the late 1960s, around 1967/68 if I remember right.  At the time I think it cost about 12.00, which made it a somewhat expensive kit.  Back then the Constitution, Kearsage, Alabama, and the other 1/96th scale ships went for about 15.00.  I remember my Father telling my Mother how expensive the ships were when hey bought me one.

Here's a few shots of a "D" that I built for a contest last year.  It was a rush job but I put a full bomg load into it, having to build the removable bomb racks and modify the pylons to handle two MERS each for the 750 pounders.  I also added barrels for the quad .50 , a couple red lights on the back of the fuselage and used some old reflective tape that I've had since I was in the Air Force back then.

Your 52 looks great ikar01, the add on bomb bay is a nice touch.  I tried to make one but it was to much of an headache, I had plenty of picture's but the main problem was cutting a piece of plastic to form the shape of the inside for the front and back.

This is what the bomb cartridges look like before they taken out to the aircraft.  I counted the bombs, laid some hasegawa 500 pound bombs on a piece of plastic, measured and drew the size and shape.  Then I cut it and used it as a master for all the sets that I needed.  I used strips of plastic between the sheets for thickness and assembled them to the framework that would attach to the top of the bomb bay.  The top of the bay was made from a plastic license plate.  The hard part was getting the correct width to allow the cartridges to fit without sticking out of the bay and having it level. I needed to reinforce the top with runners for better grip.  When it was finished you couldn't see much besides the bomb carts.

The bombs were painted overall O.D. or a combination of O.D. & med green or O.D. & field green.  Some bombs were Field green to show weathering and the tail assemblies were usually new medium green or a variation of it.

Here is my attempt at building a bomb bay for the Monogram B-52D.  This is just the structural part of the bay's overhead--without wiring or plumbing.  I have the forward and aft bulkheads  as well--just not detailed yet.  When finished, I will have the sides done also with one of the "High Density Bomb Racks" or "clips" as well--just don't know if I will install the clip and cover up my work in the interior.

Impressive detail work on an impressive model of a massive bomb hauler!  I've got an old Monogram kit in my stash, maybe two.   I think I would have to build it as a ceiling hanger along with the B-36.  I see Revellogram is releasing the B-52 with X-15.
